Hello I have joined this site in the hope of getting help to find out about my granddad's war records as no one really knows much because he didn't talk about the war to my mam and uncle. I cant ask him because he is dead now so any help would be great.

Here is the info that I know

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Taff,

Going off your granddad's service number he must have been 19 or 20 years old in 1944?

If so, he would have missed out on the Norwegian Campaign [1940], but he may well have landed on Gold Beach on D-Day - 6 June 1944.

By this time the 2nd Bn South Wales Borderers were brigaded with 2nd Bn Essex Regiment and 2nd Bn Gloucester Regiment, 56th Infantry Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division. They were with 50 Div for the purposes of the landings and the fighting in Normandy thereafter. They were in the second wave behind 231st Infantry Brigade.

On circa 11 August they moved from 50 Div to 59 Div and on 20 August from 59 Div to 49 Div - the 49th (West Riding) Division, where they remained for the duration of WWII. Their war finished in Germany, where they remained as occupation forces until 1948.

    I hope this assists.

    Best,

    Steve.

Do you have a photo of your grandfather you could post? I have a vague recollection of the name Selwood so either my grandfather knew him or he was at a reunion in Brecon. My grandfather seemed to know everyone particularly if they had been a Borderer living around Blackwood area
