I have just this week arranged for my book to also be sold in digital format, and it is now on Amazon Kindle Store and Apple for Iphones and Ipads.

War books, world war two book, ww2 books, ww2 book, wwII books, world war two books, military history, military history books, british ww2 books, ww2 paperbacks,, ww2, world war two, book, memories, raf, navy, army, marines, 1939-

I didn't really know that much about ebooks before doing this and have learnt a bit. I think they are going to become huge, due to the fact books can be sold cheaper (mine is £9.21 cheaper as an ebook compared to the printed version!) and the space saving aspect, you can store stacks of books on one device.

Like everything it will have it plus and minus points, but overall I think they could be great news for small publishers and self publishers and a bit of a headache for the big publishers. For example JK Rowling is not bothering with a publisher for her ebooks and is selling them herself in effect becoming the worlds most prolific self publisher.

One other thing I've learnt is that ebooks are subject to VAT whereas printed books are not. (So when the price on Amazon is £3.78 for the kindle book, 58 pence of that is VAT. If the same rules applied to ebooks as paper books the price would have been £3.20) Why, I'm not sure but probably because it's new the taxmen saw a good chance to change the rules on making tax revenue from books.

What do people think of ebooks???

    I prefer paper books
Im sure you will get a mixed bag of answers.

Re Ebooks I am sure that space saving and possibly a quick look up is an advantage.

    Nick,

Due to economics, and with some older books (from the early 20th and 19th century) that I could only obtain online as PDF's, I have some eBooks. However, my preference is for the feel and, the old comment, smell of paper, I find paper books easier to read.

Hi Nick - someone on here recently wrote that ebooks have no soul. That seems to sum them up really well, BUT since I got a Kindle I have read loads of them - much easier on the eyes than a pc or iPad.

However, if push comes to shove, the paper book is best - as Mark says, it's the feel and the smell of old paper!

    Regards.

    Jules.

Got to agree with you Jules, can't beat a proper paper book for the smell, texture and soul.

However, that didn't stop me offering my book in e-format :D

I wonder what the next generations will think about traditional books, will they endure or will they be in the same category as gramophone records and 100 watt light bulbs?

The Kindle version of The Unknown Warriors is now available. It's just £1.56, what a total bargain!!! 356 pages of WWII veterans memories and thoughts on the UK. So if you haven't read it yet and have a Kindle and like cheap books for it, get downloading. (p.s Don't you just hate ebooks that are hardly any cheaper than the printed versions, mine is £10 cheaper than the printed version! With the big publishers I think they should at least be selling their ebooks for less than a fiver and more like £3 max. You can't pass them on and you can't sell them on ebay either.)

    Heres the link;

I came across this book via a discussion on the Daily Telegraph.
(my guerilla marketing tactics do work then?!)

It is a collection of letters from British World War 2 veterans describing their experiences in the war and/or their thoughts about Britain today and whether they feel that the sacrifices they and their comrades made were worth the outcome. It is a book which I myself have remarked many times in the past ought to have been written and I am so pleased that someone has found the time and energy to do so.

Chillingly, it charts the decline of what was at the time of WW2 the most powerful nation on earth into a place which a great many of the old soldiers, their widows and other war survivors such as Land Army girls and blitz survivors say they would generally rather not live in and that they are so glad that they are 80+ not 18. Perhaps most unnerving of all, a number of them actually think Britain would have been improved by Hitler: something that you would never have imagined they would say.

The book is not in any way the subject of modern 'spin' to make the views more politically correct, which is refreshing. I believe that the views are really not very different from those held by a silent majority of Britains and that all politicians should have to read the book. (Well I know for a fact Gordon Brown got a copy when he was PM as a veteran sent me a tenner and said get one sent to that idiot at No. 10, so I sent one off, following my orders)

I recommend it for being an unvarnished truth and it is an achievement that it is now on the permanent record of the British nation.

No probs, what do people think of Kindle's? Good, bad, indifferent? What do you think is a fair price for a Kindle book, or what would be the price you would begin to think - thats a bit steep?

Ther wife bought me one fror my birthday, most of the books that are available on Amazon I have already saying that I have collected one or two gems that I would not of found elswhere.

The cost is a bit prohibative in most cases being the full price or just above of a new paperback, others run into £12 thru £20 pounds for a good book.

You also have to remember that they have an American slant to what they offer as well
