    Can anyone help?

    Is the regiment number incomplete?

Under the Victory heading what do the numbers means, I would assume that it refers to a battle?

    Your comments please.

    Thank you

The numbers in the medal section show the place on the medal rolls that your man is entered. These are held at The National Archives.

The Victory numbers are the Roll Ref Number and the page you will find the entry on.

Is that something that can be found online or does it mean a visit to Kew?

Apparently the entrys on the roll will often contain some soldier information for those in infantry regiments, but not usually for those in the corps such as Artillery, Engineers etc. To check you would hav to visit Kew.

If you'd like to provide some more details (date and place of birth, possible residence at enlistment, middle name) and I can see if his service record is available on Ancestry. If it is it'll clear up what his service number was. Can PM me if you'd prefer.

    Full details:-

    Thomas Joseph Chandler (DCM)
    DOB - 19/06/1891
    DOD - 19/05/1966

Possibly lived in Bexley, Kent at time of enlistment.

The DCM was awarded 1944 for his actions during the 2nd Chindit campaign.

    Thank you for helping me.

There are post/threads on here about TJ Chandler.

Ah, unfortunately I'm fairly sure those who also served in WW2 won't have their service records available on Ancestry with the rest - I think they are still with the MoD or the like - others will be able to give more details there.

I'll have a quick search but I don.t think I'll come up with anything.

So he was 53 when he was awarded his DCM?
Seems old for a platoon Sergeant.

Especially being that he was also part of the Chindit campaign. He must have been a very fit man.

What reason would you think that they would have included him as surely his age was against him by quite a big margin?
