    Hi folks,

It's some time since I posted on the forum seeking your help / information on Landing Craft Tank (Armoured), Centaur Tanks and D7 Armoured bulldozers in connection with a scuba diving project. Just to update you, we have begun work looking for the wreck of LCT(A) 2428 which capsized and sank near Selsey Bill on the 6th June 1944 after spilling its cargo of Centaurs and Dozers in Bracklesham Bay West Sussex. The project is due to feature in the next series of BBC2 Coast programme (14th July at 8pm).
In researching the possible position of the wreck of LCT(A) 2428 I became interested in several barges or dumb lighters which also appeared to be connected with the Normandy Invasion and it is hoped to investigate up to 3 of these barges this summer. The other weekend we dived the first of these barges, about 2 miles south of the Nab Tower. The UK Hydrographic Office data for this wreck indicates that it once had a large cylinder in the hold possibly for water or fuel, but in the 1990s it was swept clear by the RN and so much of the upper part of the wreck is badly damaged. We could not see signs of the cylinder but we did find some cargo which I am hoping (miracles can happen!) that someone may be able to help identify.

Firstly we came across large slabs (3' x 1' x 3") of what appeared to be stone, (granite or marble) - not very war like but I remain open minded. Then, buried in the shingle was a black shape about 12inches across with 'Autolite' embossed on the top. It resembled the size of a car battery and I suspect that is what it is. A quick google has revealed some information -the company made batteries for Willys jeeps etc as well as being the major manufacturer of spark plugs and other vehicle spares during WW2. If anyone has any thoughts about the cargo I'd be interested to hear from them. Also, anyone with information about the barges used to support the Allies during Operation Overlord (those Wallowing Beauties). Also any information on LCT(A)s and the type of armoured used to give them added protection.

    Thanks for your time

    Regards

ps, We are putting on a special display at the D Day museum over 6th/7th June about the Tanks and Bulldozers project and our other diving projects. Please feel free to say hello if you are visiting the museum this weekend.
