Glosterman - your posting re the NZSCO and FSNCo was pleasing to see - something I was unaware of...

The loss of the Cambridge is something I researched (grandfather was Bosun) the single fatality was most unfortunate - from what I can tell from the plans of the ship John Kinnair bunked near my grandfather in cabins near the stern, not far from where the mine struck - he was apparently just about to get into the lifeboat when he realised his wallet was in his cabin and he returned to collect it - he was never seen again - the wreck lies in 60m of water (just below regular diving equipment limitations) and there are colour images on the web.

I have found a discrepancy in the above list of losses. According to Chorley's Vol.7 'Bomber Command Losses' Paterson was not a crew member of this aircraft, in fact I cannot find a Sgt. W G. Paterson lost during ops in 1944 in Chorley's book 'RAF Bomber Command Losses Roll of Honour 1939-1947. Where as, the entry for Sgt. Potts reads.....1867154 Sgt.POTTS John Frederick. 13-06-44. 28 OTU

The details of the loss are as follows, taken from the relevant BCL book.

    13 June 1944

    28 OTU
    Wellington X LP397
    Op. Training.

Took off 1447 hrs from Castle Donington for a cross country. Came out of the cloud cover in a steep dive, and crashed 1512 hrs near the parish church at Mayfield, a Staffordshire village close to the border with Derbyshire and about 3 miles west of Ashbourne airfield. The four RCAF airmen rest in Brookwood Military Cemetery. Sgt. Star [sic] of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia lies in Nottingham Jewish Cemetery while Sgt. Potts is at Shirley (St. John) Churchyard, Croydon. An investigation into the crash could find no evidence of structural failure but the possibility that the aircraft was struck by lightening could not be ruled out.

    Crew.

    F/O. J. Star +
    F/O. G D W. Buchanan RCAF +
    Sgt. W C. Davis RCAF +
    Sgt. J F. Potts +
    Sgt. R J. Taylor RCAF +
    Sgt. J J U. Stevens RCAF +

Can anyone add more to this?

Additionally Sgt John Frederick Potts, RAFVR, has been recorded as being onboard this aircraft. However he was killed the same day in Anson EG472 on Moel Hebog in North Wales. His death was registered at Pwllheli, the district which covered the area around Moel Hebog.

Seems to have cleared that up.

    Many thanks.
