I might be stretching staff car with the Command vehicles, but what the hell... Haven't checked the types either, so expect errors.

Thanks for a useful thread Morrisc8, this subject could do with some coverage and clarity. At risk of appearing churlish, what makes a car a 'staff car' rather than a 'unit hack'. Pre-Jeep, and later for rear/training units and many RAF and Naval bases, small saloon cars were hard working workhorses and a real credit to the British automotive industry. The majority of the passengers would not have been 'red tabs' - I love your picnic scene.

    Cheers

I had that 'what is a staff car' thought myself, Keith. Which is why I felt a tad guilty at posting the WCs - should a 'Staff Car' be an essentially Civvy machine? Or does that preclude Tillys etc. which certainly often carried some appropriate passengers. I think we might have to put too careful a distinction aside and crack on with the pictures.

'Dienstwagen' on Bundesarchiv turns up some goodies, if a tad ante-bellum round the edges (obtain picture data from codes on images):-

Another picture of that Morris 8 appeared in an article by Mike Conniford on bridge numbers in Military Modelling a long time ago. I wonder if there are any more?

I might as well post this one here.

I can't remember where the photo came from and I am worried it originated on this forum before being saved to my laptop.

Who are those blokes? Why is a dog driving the car?? Why is there a 10 year-old kid wearing uniform in the background????

Listed as 451 (RAAF) SQN, Sinai 1943

Intrigued by the gate post to "Cam House" in the third photograph of post #12, I 'Googled' it.

The likely candidate was Cam House on Camden Hill. After a string of aristocratic occupants, it was the subject of a sale of its contents in July 1939 and then requisitioned.

It looks as if the gate posts were already rather knocked about when the photograph was taken and like so many large properties, was left in a poor state...

"After being requisitioned for military use during the war of 1939–45 Cam House fell into disrepair. It was demolished in 1955 for the building of Holland Park School."

Here's a pic of my grandfather in a car after the end of the war in Europe. No idea what model it is. Family lore is he drove some big wigs around (but it is 2-door only). The car also seems to be left-hand drive!
