Hi all, thank you for allowing into the group. I have been in discussion on another forum who have now passed me here for further help. My wife is attempting to build a family tree and we have hit a dead end with one member. We are searching for records of a UK solider named Fred Varley Born 02/03/1912 Died in Leeds Served in India during the war as MP from what pictures suggest From pictures we have, it shows he was a Lance corporal and so far we seem to have had some success with information, picture attached showing one particular person. The names of William and Doris on the attached do ring a bell with family members so we are hopeful this is the man in question but... I am a complete novice at this kind of thing and have no idea how to find out more. I have attached an image we have of him amd the data found so far from someone in another forum. We know he lived until around 1990 give or take 4 to 4 years either side. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction or help please. Thank you Paul We also know hehadhe had sister called Daisy and we know the Doris (in the list of names) was born around 1898 Thank you Paul I'm told once I know the correct details I should be able to source a death certificate and then request service records from the MOD but as mentioned, I have no idea how to find people information to be able to find or request a death certificate so all help would be hugely appreciated please Regards Paul
Hi Paul, Here's a starter for ten that matches the details given..... dob on death registration match yours along with place of death; should help in getting death certificate so you can send off for MOD records. 1939 Register Address; 35 Astor Street, Leeds William Varley, Willeyer & Fetler Textile b.20 Oct 1872, widowed Doris Varley, Unpaid Domestic duties, b.14 Nov 1899, single John Varley, Iron Moulder heavy worker, b.10 Jul 1909, widowed Fred Varley, Boiler Firer heavy worker, b. 03 Mar 1912, single Nothing to substantiate but the marital status suggests William is likely the father and the other 3 are his children. Death Registration Name: Fred Varley Death Age: 78 Birth Date: 2 Mar 1912 Registration Date: Jan 1991 Registration district: Leeds Inferred County: West Yorkshire Volume: 5 Page: 520
Hello Paul Mods should move your thread to the below and you need to state his name in the title Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy Post what you have photos etc Forum members will possibly add more info if they can As you are aware the only route for his service records is Get a copy of military service records You will not find any detailed service info about him via pay for sites on the internet Please read below re death cert Order a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate Regards Clive
Hi wibs12 Thank you very much for the above, this is interested and inline with the original information provided so looking hopeful. I've managed to compress some more pictures and added to the string CL1 Thank you for the guidance, I was very tempted to register with a paid site so thank you for stopping me going ahead. We are currently reaching out to family to see if the above rings any bells, the address above doest yet, as my wife recalls him living elsewhere just before he passed away. Is the Aston address where Fred resided according to records or where William lived? Trying to digest the info, is this suggesting William was Fred's father please? Regards Paul
Hi Paul, William was indeed Fred's father. Can't see any military records at present but able to find a chunk of census related details about his wider family. Fred was one of at least 9 children. His parents (William Varley and Lavinia Foster) married 17 Feb 1897 at St Lukes in Eccleshill. He lived at 21 Victoria Street, Leeds and Lavinia a few doors down at no.15. Fred's siblings were: Ernest b1895, Elsie b1898, Doris b1899, Myrtle b1904, William b1905, Edith b1907, Faith 1908 and John b1910. Believe the eldest, Ernest, was maybe an illegitimate son of Lavinia born prior to the marriage to a different father. As an aside, Ernest served in WW1 in the Royal Flying Corp then RAF. Fred's father William lived at the 35 Astor Street address from at least 1911 until his death in 1939, Service records are defo the way to go re the military records, although there are plenty of clued up folk who may be able to interpret some details in the pics for you..... good luck! Paul
Very daft moment on my part. We have just noticed writing on the back of 2 photos. Hoping you can help understand please. On the back of the team photo is a note saying something like 394 Indian division? (Something) team. Please see below
wibs12 that address is aboutaabout a 5 minute walk from where my wife recalls Doris and Fred lived so this absolutely seems like it's the right person
Brilliant thank you so much Tullybrone PS apologies some words aren't presenting right. They are for me until I submit and then seem to combine or duplicate
Hi wibs12 is that date of death Jan 1991 or when the death was registered? Or are they one of the same please?
Paul.... the date is the date of registration not specific date of death. Order the death certificate using the details quoted above via the General Register Office here..... costs about £11 should be with you within the week.
Paul..... you're sort of in the right space but you need to order the certificate, not search for the details... the details you need are what I've already provided above (and repeated below). Go to this page at the GRO website and you'll need to register to be able to process an order. Once registered, on the home page select the 'Order a Certificate' option. Fill in the details as required, using: Name: Fred Varley Death Age: 78 Birth Date: 2 Mar 1912 Registration Date: Jan 1991 Registration district: Leeds Inferred County: West Yorkshire Volume: 5 Page: 520
wibs12 the form asks for (date of death in dd/mm/yy) format, However as stated the date of registration and date of death can be different? Do gov.uk contact you back with a list of records they've found before sending on please? Thanks again for all your help. Regards Paul
Hi Paul......... looks like you've filled in the wrong table. If the person who's certificate you're ordering is under 16 years of age they require the specific date of death, otherwise they ask you to leave that whole section blank. See image below..... you'll get there!.... as long as you put in the correct details they don't contact you back, they just post it to you. Paul
