Ok, we are gradually kick-starting the WW2 Society. We would be very interested and appreciative of any input you can give on what direction the Society should or could go in, and what you would like to get out of being a member of it. The may well be some obvious stuff we are missing, and all and every comment welcome - even if we don't act on it immediately. Comments on a Field Postcard, please!
Comments on a Field Postcard, please! OK (though I can't really comment on a FPC or it'll be destroyed!!! LOL )...If I can be of any assistance at all , just say...
Opinions cunningly disguised as great thought... I think; if it's dedicated to the British and Commonwealth side of things, it might be a good idea to name it as such (eg: B&CWW2 Soc.). you might consider founding it on either the 3rd of Sept next year, to tie it in with the start of the war and the 70th anniversary. a cracking newsletter is a must really, something which members go "wow" when they get it. Would this be printed, web pdf or both? the AGM is a good idea, I'd suggest tying it in with a big event or venue (eg War & peace, IWM, etc) so that it also offers a good promotional opportunity for the soc. as well as the original function. It might be a good idea to move the event/venue to get a wider reach. it's worth considering linking the expertise of the membership with the chance to make simple WW2 presentations at schools. A few "generic" presentations could be created to be given all over the place by members. It's not a great earner but it would boost funds a little. It might also open the doors for further funding from a third party. cheers,
Hi Paul ! Will you be posting membership rates ? ... I couldn't find any ... but then that could be just me !! Me personally .... I would like to see as much as possible on POW's ... or tutorials on the same ! Sorry ..... Dave has the monopoly on Field Postcards !! Annie
What's your plan with the newsletter? Apologies, I have been away for the last 9 days. The plan initially is to publish it in pdf format and make it available to members via this website, and on the WW2 Society website. As there are no print costs, it will be full colour. Articles for the first issue are already coming in and/or are in preparation. More welcome! Once we have a wider membership and move towards paid membership the journal will go into print format, as is usual with a society of this nature. However, we can't run before we can walk!

Annie Hi Annie, As mentioned above I have been away, so excuse the delay in replying. While the Society is located and largely revolves around here and the Society website, it will be free. Even though it is 'free' people will still have to join, and thus enable them to access member only content related to the Society. At least, that's the plan. There will only be a membership fee once we go towards being a more conventional society.
If articles for journal are being sought, then are guidelines for format or length available? I'd also agree with the comment above that the name should reflect the aims. If the name doesn't make it clear that it's intended principally to be a British Commonwealth orientated body when it is, then the organisers will get hassle and complaints from people about 'British bias'.
You have in fact already published guidelines for submitting articles to the journal in the thread linked below. Sorry, I should have searched. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/ww2-society-information/15165-ww2-society-journal-can-you-help.html
Just an idea, but since the very useful and popular 'Ex-RAF' site has gone offline, perhaps the society newsletter and website could step in to fill the gap, and include a section for people who are looking for information on family members or friends who they served with? The society may be in a position to help the members of various veterans groups who are not online get in contact with lost friends. Obviously this wouldn't be just RAF - all services should be included (maybe a section for POWs, etc).
Yes, that is a great idea, and one I had in mind. I am hoping that online members who know veterans or veterans groups might be in a position to print off the journal and pass it around. That is until it becomes a proper paper journal.
Just gonna kick of my wooly socks and dabble my toes in here for a bit. * What is the release date for the aforementioned journal? * Will there be whiskey or haggis served at the opening ceremony? * Is it possible to disseminate the .pdf file via email to potential members once launched? * Is there anything we can do just now Captain Reed that will aid or abet you in this endeavour?

Thanks for your input, Shane. To answer your points: * Release date is 'sometime before Christmas' (this year!). * If you bring it, it will be there... whiskey and haggis that is. * The pdf file will be email-able, but we want to make sure members get it first. It will then be available to download via the Society website as well. * You can stop calling me Captain, and no need to stand to attention when you speak... But seriously, the best thing you can do is join. That will help us enormously.

Why not have a grace period of a week for members to read the journal then tell them to go forth and spread the news via email or a link to the website. Hmmm... have I joined yet or is this just the first of many trials on the road to society membership. Ok Commander.
We are going to sort out the means for people to join via this site. It needs to some technical input from us Mods, so leave it with us for now.
Roger that, Im a moderator at the Blitz Wargaming Club which has over 6000 members. I will do a spot of advertising around the web for you if you like. I also run a website called the Few Good Men which is basically another WW2 Wargame themed site as well as hosting a blog so hopefully I can help increase your member base. I will get to it with your permission once I feed my timerous wee beasties at my Haggis Farm. They get awful angry if I dont give them their daily dose of live chickens.
