What ww2 records are available to view on-line, does anyone know when they are going to made available??? The contact address for army records (service record, medal cards) is a glasgow address? Thankyou having trouble viewing other posts at the moment
HI footymum No ww2 records are available online (I presume you mean British) and as for when, probably not for a while and yes the contact to write to to apply for records is a Glasgow address. Here is a link- Ministry of Defence | Defence For... | Researchers | Find Historical information regards Robert
The only records available on line are WW2 Casualties at the CWGC and there is a technique to view WW2 Gallantry Citations for free on the National Archives website. Service Records cost £30 and unit war diaries can be viewed in person with no charge at the National Archives.

As Bofors said you need to apply for service records, none are available online. Medal cards - do you mean like WW1 medal index cards? Service records should contain information about medals awarded. In order for anyone who is not the veteran in question to apply for service records, proof of death must be supplied. In fact MOD like to have the service number quoted in an application, but if not possible, a DOB should be supplied in order to help cross reference. == There is the very real danger of Identity theft. We have been warned not to give out anything where our service numbers are concerned Brian, you've mentioned this a few times before on the forum, and it's also been pointed out that many many service numbers are already available in the public domain - for instance in reputable publications like the London Gazette. You may have been told once to keep yours private, but a National Insurance No. is likely to be of much more importance security-wise.
