There are no service records in the public domain for WW2. For reasons of privacy, MOD seem to have the intention to retain until 100 years after date (or 20 years after the death of the last veterans or so). You need to download the forms, get your Grandfather to sign as next of kin and send them off with a cheque to Glasgow. There really is no other way, other than to wait until 2050 or so.

    Read post 3 again.

A kind member attached a link in that post to MOD website so you can download the forms you need to complete and post to MOD Glasgow.

    Dan,
Heres a copy of the forms you need to download. (Army) don't forget the death certificate. Be patient they take about 4-6 weeks.
Oh and the cheque for £30.
    good luck,......Graham.

Thanks mate googled them on the gov website and read it was £30 to send for the service records form and £30 for the military search form so £60 altogether

It's £30, The reference to each application is if you are applying for more than one serviceman.

His service number, 14833788, indicates that he enlisted in the General Service Corps, before you ask:

Dan, I guess that there is a possibility that someone who comes across this website, by accident or design, and recognises the name may well have already received his service records and will able to give you chapter and verse of what and where he was. As previously explained WW2 is nothing like WW1 in that the amount of information openly available on the internet is very limited.

Although he signed up with the GSC he could well have been transferred to another unit at any time thereafter, unlike WW1 where transferring soldiers often had new service numbers this was not the case in WW2 where service personnel retained their original number so it is not necessarily a guide to where there faced action, if at all.

As an example my father enlisted with the Royal Fusiliers on 3 April 1940, with a corresponding number, however researching the RFs would have completely missed the fact that he joined the newly created Reconnaissance Corps on 11 Jan 1941 and saw all his action with them.

I am afraid that unless you have any family information (you say you haven't) then you will need to hang around to see if anyone is kind enough to post his records – or invest £30 to obtain them, I see no alternative.

Enlistment via the General Service Corps was introduced as part of a (generally successful) scheme to ensure that recruits were sent to where they were most useful. Prior to this, they chose their own regiments for enlistment and the specialist services were competing as well with the glamorous RAF who inevitably took many of the best. It was quite normal to enlist GSC for basic training and then never see the other recruits again. My father elisted GSC in February 1943 (with a 145***** number) He did his basic training at No.18 PTC and was then posted to a Training Battalion, Royal Signals. (This was based on the fact that he knew morse from his ATC days !) 'most' of the men would have gone on to infantry battalions. Some would have stayed together but by no means all.

Really, honestly, you have to apply for his service records if you're serious about this research and there is only one way to do it.

    Dan,
That's good,it will be the best £30 you ever spent.
When you receive his record upload it here and the members will help you decipher it's contents.

    best........Graham.
