I was going to say Hube as well but he wasn't born in 1880 so I thought it couldn't be him.

Hube was the guy I was looking for!! so Blackblue gets it!! Well Done! Geoff and Jimbo, I have copied an article which gives his date of birth as 1880. If it is wrong I do humbly apologise. I did not mean to lead anyone astray with my info
I will do my best to research better in future!
    From Spartacus.net:

Hans Hube was born in Naumburg, Germany, on 29th October, 1880. He joined the German Army and in 1910 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He served throughout the First World War and was seriously wounded and as a result lost his left arm.

Despite his disability, Hube remained in the army and in 1939 was promoted to colonel. Hube took part in the invasion of Poland where he was again seriously wounded. He returned to duty the following year and as commander of the 16th Motorized Division participated in the Western Offensive.

Promoted to major general he participated in Operation Barbarossa. A brave officer, Hube won the Knight's Cross (August 1941), Oakleaves (January 1942) and Swords (December 1942). Hube was at Stalingrad and was one of the senior officers evacuated from the front on 28th January 1943, when it was clear the German Army would be defeated.

In March 1943 Hube was now given command of 14th Panzer Corps and soon afterwards was sent to Italy. In July General Erwin Rommel sent Hube to Sicily.

Hube, Germany's only one-armed general in the Second World War, was placed in command of the 1st Panzer Army in October 1943. He was badly defeated by General Ivan Konev and the Red Army at Dniester in March 1944. Soon afterwards he clashed with General Erich von Manstein when he ordered him to stay north of the Carpathians. When Manstein was replaced by General Walther Model, Hube got his way and was able to retreat across the Dniester.

On 20th April 1944 Hube returned to Germany where Adolf Hitler personally awarded him the Diamonds. Hans Hube was killed when his plane crashed while returning to the Eastern Front on 21st April 1944.

The AMF's 26th Battalion was a militia battalion raised in the North of Queensland in 1939 for home defence and saw service in North Queensland, the Torres Straight Islands and Dutch New Guinea in this role. Later in the war the battalion saw action against the Japanese in the Solomon Islands.

Two Australian WW1 Victoria Cross winners resided in the Central/North Queensland area at the commencement of WW2 and were instrumental in raising and training this battalion. Who were they?

Well done Spidge. The first is correct...Edgar Towner....and the one I thought would be the hardest to get. The second, Joe Maxwell, is incorrect....this one should be a cinch!

I think I'll have to move away from the Australian questions as its getting a bit tiring seeing you answer every one!! Have to remember this is a worldwide forum!

    Thanks Blackblue.

    One for the navy boys.

    What is my name?

I was at Pearl Harbour on December 7th 1941.

    The Japs couldn't get me.

I was a lucky ship which saw duty in the Indian Ocean and heavy engagements in the PTO

I helped bring down a President

Although my name was changed, I was sunk by a previously friendly ally.

Well as far as "lucky", I thought it might be an encryptic reference to "Vegas" so Nevada was the guess. If by lucky you mean survived the most beatings that might be the Pennsylvania who took a lot of beatings but dished out even more. It saw heavy engagements everywhere, I assume that it went into the Indian Ocean at times, though I don't know specific battles. It was never renamed though. I think it flew honor flags bearing "Mayflower" at Yorktown with Wilson on board one time but I don't remember it ever being renamed. If not the Penn, I can't think of any other ship at Pearl that you could strap the term "lucky" on that would have carried a president.
