Name the Italian Air Marshal shot down by his own gunners over Tobruk in 1940. (Hint: he was a pre-war aviator who gained fame with long-distance flights)

Does anybody give any creedence to the assertion by his wife that it was an assassination ordered by Mussolini?

I think its likely, Italo Balbo was well known to have held the belief that Italy should have been at the side of Britain rather than Germany and his public comments certainly did not go down to well with Mussolini.

The claim that is was an error to shoot down one of your aircrafts that you knew were returning from a routine patrol kind of stinks a bit.

My views on Mussolini are well know, he was a coward in the bigger picture and had more faces than the town hall clock, siding with whoever threatened him rather than stand up for himself, but this kind of assassination was right up his street.

He died in 1930 from a heart attack. Although the similarities between him and balbo are quite striking in areas.

    Rules

For ease of access, these are the quiz rules, copied over from the old thread, which is now closed:

    These are the rules:

1.Questions must be about any aspect of WWII. This can include the origins of the war and the aftermath.

2.Who ever answers the question correctly first can ask the next question. The person setting the question will state whether answers are correct in the first instance, but if they fail to do so within 24 hours, the quiz supervisor or moderator will invite the person who answered to post a source and decide if the answer is likely to be correct (they may invite opinions at this stage).

3.Google searches (or any other search engine) are allowed.

4.Make sure that the questions you ask are accurate. Both the person setting the question and the person answering it must be able to provide a source if required by any member.

5.If a question is not answered correctly in three days, the questions poster has 24 hours to ask another question. Addition 26/11/04, effective 27/11/04: If the poster has not asked a new question after 24 hours, anyone can ask a question.

5A. Posted 12/8/05, opearative 13/8/05: At any time when there is no current answer to a question, the poster can withdraw the question (and post the answer), in which case the quiz is open to the first member to post a new question, other than the poster of the withdrawn question.

6.If the poster's second question is still not answered correctly after three days, anyone can ask a question.

7.Once a question is answered, and verified as correct by the person who set it, the person who answered the question correctly has 48 hours to ask a new question. If a new question is not asked in the allotted time, then anyone can ask a new question.

9.In the event of any dispute over the accuracy of a question or answer, you can take it up with the quiz supervisor or the moderator, who shall decide the issue (but please remember that the quiz is for fun). If the question remains in doubt at this stage, the quiz supervisor or the moderator may post it as a topic for debate on the relevant forum and open the quiz for a new question.

10.After completing the turn, the last person to ask a question must wait 24 hours after the posting of the next question before answering, to give others a chance to win.

11.The quiz supervisor can modify the rules to the quiz at any time, but the change will not come into effect for 24 hours after it is posted.

12.The quiz supervisor is the member who started the quiz until such time as it is agreed that another member takes over.

    13. New rule 26/11/04, effective 27/11/04. As long as you follow the rules, you do not have to wait for the quiz supervisor's permission to get on with the quiz - and have fun!

    14. In the case of any conflict between these rules and the version shown in the first post of the old quiz topic, these rules, as amended from time to time, are the current authorised version.

Please note that one promised amendment is still due and will be done in the next few days.

Meanwhile, was it Bilbo we ask, Lee in particular, but he will have to wait for Kiwiwriter, because it is still only 5.00am in Newark, NJ.

The old thread was closed purely due to its size for the sake of the database. Big threads like that can cause problems. So its better to split them on a regular basis.

Italo Balbo is the correct answer! He was shot down by his own AA gunners. Nobody is sure if they were just panicking or trying to whack one of Mussolini's old cronies, who had since become one of his critics. :)

    Your turn, Lee!

An hour before the air attack on Pearl Harbor, the destroyer USS Ward said it fired a shot into the base of the conning tower of an unknown submarine.

Can anyone tell me what type of sub it was and what its intentions were?

    Japanese A1 midgets.

From memory, they were to sink any ships that escaped the harbour or attempt to sink ships and block the channel.

    Footnote:

USS Ward was sunk 3 years to the day in the Philippines after landing her troops. The order to abandon and sink WARD was given by another ship USS O'Brien whose Captain was commanding the Ward on December 7th 1941.

A later commissioned USS O'Brien (Korean War) was captained by Nimitz's son.

Spidge got there first but nice picture from Morse so either can post the next question.

I have recently found a new interest in the underwater in terms of these and other small subs used during the war. Many were used in different ways and its all quite fascinating.
