Post 119 looks like Belgians in post-war occupied Germany. Bike in the foreground is an F.N. (same as the gunmaker). They even used that strange front suspension on works scramblers.

    Quite a bit pre-war, looks like a 101 Scout.

That's a strange pic - apart from the ubiquitous WLA LOL I mean the long building in the background on he left, looks like a covered marketplace or stock yard/auction yard. A BIG roof supported by rows of pillars.

Those are interesting pictures Owen. The bike is a Royal Enfield WD/CO and I've beaten Rewdco to the ID !

The census number C1366275 falls correctly within the batch 1363211 - 1368210 issued to Polish forces. It would be interesting to know whether this Polish census number replaced one in the factory contract sequences or if these vehicles were additional as yet unaccounted for production.

    Anyone posted this yet?

    Hey Rich,
Yes, you beat me with this one! :D I can tell you some details though:
    - This is indeed a Royal Enfield WD/CO 350cc OHV motorcycle.
    - Rubber kneegrips etc mean that this bike was built before the end of 1942, when due to the rubber shortage these rubber fittings were omitted.
    - The bike still looks fairly new, so the 1943 date sounds plausible.
    - This motorcycle appears to have an Albion gearbox.
All these arguments tell me that this must have been a contract C/11081 motorcycle. The original British census numbers for these motorcycles (with frame numbers #1001 > # 6000) were C4605601 until C4610600. Some of these bikes must indeed have been renumbered...

No, it's a Harley OK, you can tell by the front "Castle" style fork - like a modern "Springer"?

Looking more closely - he IS trickling along at walking speed....for he has his left foot on the Harley's FOOT clutch ;)

Interestingly, however - the throttle AND front brake lever ARE on the nearside!!! I presume this is a VERY early US pic....possibly even PRE-December 7th 1941; some H-Ds were flipped over to left hand throttle for they were still fiddling with the strange idea of a singleton motorcycle being a fighting platform and the rider being able to use his Thompson on the move!

    For fans of BMW375s....

    BBC iPlayer - Newsnight: 16/06/2009

BBC economics editor deep in China's west...go to 24:10 mins onwards for an amusing insight into Chinese biking culture and enthusiasm for the Chang Jiang (BMW375s re-engineered in USSR then technology re-exported to China)....and, apparently, 'The Great Escape'...

Cracking bikes BTW, very popular with expats in Shanghai etc...
