WW2 Medal question

Can anyone clarify a WW2 medal question that I have regarding my father’s service medals in WW2? He served in the Royal Navy 1940-1945 mainly in the Atlantic and North Africa. We have him pictured in uniform near the end of the war with a single 1939-1945 ribbon plus rosette - but, from what I can gather, bars for that ribbon were only awarded for Battle of Britain and Bomber Command. Later we have him pictured with 4 ribbons (39-45, Atlantic, N. Africa, Italy) with rosettes on the Atlantic and N. Africa ribbons (France & Germany bar and N. Africa bar) and no rosette on the 39-45 ribbon. So what would the original rosette be for? One of the subsequent bars?

    Hi

Are you sure it is not the Africa star ribbon? - Africa Star - Wikipedia

I have a picture of my Dad with just the Africa Star ribbon on his uniform.

It's definitely not the the Africa star ribbon - I have the actual ribbon with rosette in my possession.
I also read through the link above, but being a Navy man he didn't qualify for either the Battle of Britain or Bomber Command clasps (the only two awarded for that Star).
Thanks for the replies - all I can think of is that the protocol was different during the war years?

In ww2 the bomber command clasp was not issued as this was only authorised a few years ago

Could it be the Atlantic Star? As the Atlantic Star was qualified for first, he would not get the France and Germany Star (or potentially the Air Crew Europe Star) awarded - hence the bar, with a silver rosette for the ribbon. Could it be this? From experience with veterans, campaign stars were occasionally awarded during the war. In any case it would not be sensible to issue a dated medal before the end of hostilities.

Can you post the pictures you have and images of the medals that you have

    TD

    edited to add:
Do you also have a copy of his service records as these will contain his medal entitlement

Ribbons, stars and bars are as per first post. Have a copy of Service Record (i.e. where he was and when) but nothing concerning his medal entitlement.

When ribbons alone are worn, the clasp is denoted by a silver rosette.
So the rosette on the Atlantic Star represents the clasp for the France & Germany Star. The rosette on the Africa Star represents the clasp (inscribed North Africa) which was awarded to personnel of the Royal Navy Inshore Squadrons.

The rosette on the 1939-45 star is incorrect in my opinion.

    Regards
    Hugh
