An unexploded bomb unearthed on a new housing development is to be detonated in a controlled explosion within 24 hours, police have said.

The live bomb was found at the development on Rawcliffe Road, Goole, close to the M62, on Thursday morning.

Reports on the local news say that two workers using a digger came upon an obstacle which they thought could be a drain or something when they were digging new foundations for the new houses on the estate. Apparently they couldn't shift it after nudging it a couple of times (!), so they sent another chap to go down to see what it was and he saw the 500 lb bomb. Blimey-they were lucky:eek:.

I said i wonder what a 500 pound bomb would sound like Oracle said A loudenboomer. I then said what would a 1000 pounder sound like? and he said an evenloudenboomer

Last night it was reported that 400 tons of sand had been delivered to the site of the uncovered bomb. I think sand will be used as in other bomb disposal tasks to attenuate the blast effects of the controlled explosion.

A similar approach was made with the disposal of the Exeter bomb earlier this year when dealing with a Luftwaffe 1000 Kg bomb but damage was sustained to surrounding area buildings from this larger bomb.

Reports say that the 500 lb bomb is from a crashed Lancaster which given the declared imperial weight of 500 lbs as accurate would be a bomb from the RAF bomb inventory.

My initial thoughts were that it could be a Luftwaffe 250 Kg bomb possibly from the raids on the Hull and Google docks.

Just to say if you look at the link i posted it breaks down most of the german bomb types during WW2 and is very informative

That's strange. Of course it should have read Goole which from my youth I was acquainted having played against Goole Grammar School at RU and attended Goole Town FC ground as a visiting spectator. Interestingly also with a Scunthorpe and District League visiting team that played in a park setting close to the M62 and possibly close to the area where the bomb has been found.

But it probably goes deeper than that in the sub conscious mind.20 odd years ago my niece, living at Snaith was pregnant and was told she would be booked in to the Goole maternity home for the birth. She was unhappy about it and said that she did not wish her child to be born "a Goolie" and instead chose Scunthorpe where her son was born a Yella Belly....we often often have a joke about it particularly with her son that he could have been born "a Goolie".I would doubt if he would understand a Goolie accent now.

Earlier reports gave 1330 for the controlled explosion

I really did not know that there were WW2 bombs in UK still sleeping".
I thought this was a Germany threat only.

There are quite a lot, but the Luftwaffe bombs, particularly from 1940 tended to be smaller than the RAF were able to lift later in the war, so they do less damage...usually.

Exeter WW2 bomb detonated after homes evacuated

Presumably there were no unexploded V1s or V2s ?

They say it was dropped by a Lancaster bomber making a crashed landing
