Once again I am appealing for further help or insight to my grandfarther , I have just recived this photograph from my Uncle of what my grandfarther designed during the war. I thought the Warheads that I have where part of this new rocket but I am not so sure in all honestly it looks like a small V1 rocket so I am hoping someone may know more , oh in the photo the gentleman facing towards the camera is my grandfarther and just on a special note I have finally found his BEM that he was awarded for his work.
Nice shots to have. There's a rather good series of books on 'British Secret Projects' that might well be worth a shufti if you haven't already. My old man has the couple I've seen, so I can't check 'em directly, but they're pretty thorough as far as my non-aviationist eye can tell. : British Secret Projects: Hypersonics, Ramjets and Missiles: Amazon.co.uk: Chris Gibson, Tony Buttler: Books If nobody IDs that beasty, I'll email him to have a look. Cosford is the museum that specialises in early guided stuff, - they certainly seem to keep the 'national collection' of missiles - they might well be worth an enquiry too: Cosford Air Museum West Midlands days out in Shropshire - RAF Museum
Thanks for the lead and the note of the BSP Book , I have started to make enquires I have had a lot of response saying about the Brakemine Missile but the rocket in the photo and the Brakemine do differ ....... once again cheers for the infomation and yes if I hit a brick wall I get back in touch.
Received some scans - Fairey 'Stooge' might be worthy as a further line of enquiry, though I've only got a diagram, and the wings seem to be further forward (we are talking experimental, so who knows what was shifted). Nose and overall layout appear to fit though, down to those four little pipes. Brakemine doesn't seem to fit at all does it, though both look to be contemporaries.
Some pics of Stooge, from here. This might interest: 1947 | 1382 | Flight Archive -Rocketry at Westcott - A visit to the Ministry of supply rocketry Establishment
Thanks again for this added infomation , i have email Cosford Air Museum so will try and see if they can help further ...... however what you have just sent throguh is very interesting espically about the Flight Archive......this is all great research for me. The link for all of this is my grandad was at RAE Farnbourgh , Fairly Aviation and I have had some confomation that the picture with the test firing rocket is Aberporth which alot of testing took place......let you know how I get on.....thank you again for the help so far.
Glad to be of some small help mate. Aviation's not my thing, but I do have a taste for prototypes and British engineering in general, and a passing fascination with rockets. Do keep us posted when you find more about Grandad. Looking at the scans I've got, that British Projects book might be right up your street, if only for general technical/development stuff. Have a look first though, as I don't want to recommend a pricey little book that doesn't prove entirely relevant.
Hi again not got too far as yet have sent enquiries to RA Museum , Imperial war Museum , Cosford and REME Museum still no bites just The Brakemine project keeps coming up.......will keep you in the loop My grandfarther was at RAE Farnbough and Fairey Aviation and with Aberporth being the main connection there must be a link somewhere......guess its the fun part of research.
