There's a very good forum on the First World War which you'll find at 1914-18 Forum. It's full of knowledgable people who, if you place your enquiry in the right place, will I'm sure be able to help you out.

It was actually the "King's Regiment (Liverpool)", but was usually known as the Liverpool regiment. It amalgamated with the Manchester Regiment in 1958 and became known as "The Kings Regiment" in 1969.

It is soon to amalgamate with the QLR and the KORB and will suffer another name change - a name I've already forgotten!! (King's Lancashire and Border Regiment?)

He was possibly wounded or invalided somehow which made him unfit for "combat" and therefore transferred to the Labour Corps. His service number changed because, before 1920, the numbers were allocated within a regimental basis. (You change your regiment, you change your number!). This is how you can get several soldiers with the same number.
