Hello Everyone does anyone know the best method of cleaning war medals my mum has just given me my Grandfathers WW1 medals 1914/1915 "Pip", The British War Medal, 1914-18 "Squeak" & The Allied Victory Medal "Wilfred" the ribbons are a little grubby & the medals need a little polishing these are so precious to me I don't want to ruin them with harsh chemicals. i know this is a WW2 forum but any advice would be appreciated Thanks in advance.
Hi If it is just tarnish, and not a buildup of grime, just leave them. Patina is something collectors say to leave alone. But you will probably get lots of different answers, its your decision. regards Robert
WW1 ? Leave them uncleaned WW2 ? See my comment #5: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/barracks/15834-cleaning-medals.html Ron
Gents Without wishing to stress the obvious, I have been polishing my own medals, admittably only once a year, since 1947. As someone who has a knowledge of metals (through a collection of ancient coins) I can only report that my treatment of them has not had any adverse effect on their condition. Trust me ! Ron
Thanks everyone I am proud to have these medals & have now found my Grandfathers enlistment papers from WW1 which confirm his service no. stamped on the outer rim which i never noticed until i was looking at them more closely, also looking at finding a display box to put them in so they can sit prouudly on my wall.
