    Hi all,

I have a conundrum regarding my grandfather. I have had a notice today from Ancestry that tells me about his WW1 medal rolls index, and this hit shows a Hubert W Carter as being in the Tank Corps with a reg number 110444. Now I know he born 1890, and at 16 was working on the railways, ending up in the late 1950's as a Station Master. I never heard a thing from my father or grandfather about him being in WW1 as I have always assumed being on the railways would have been a 'reserved occupation'. I know that both my grandfathers brothers in law's were involved in the war.

I am confused and guess the only way would be to obtain a copy (if the exist due to the 'Burnt' records) of this H W Carters WW1 service record to find out if there are any points of commonality, between them and what I actually know.

Is there any form of access to files via whatever the Tank Corps WW1 has now become - any links would be appreciated.

Your best move might be to contact Bovington as they should have all Tank Records going back to day 1 - the railways - like all other industries had excess personnel at times

    Cheers

Thanks Tom - I was unsure if the records would be kept in TNA (where I have found other WW1 relatives info, except burnt copies) or elsewhere. I have sent an email to Bovington.

Try the Great War Forum. They have experts there who will know the size of his underpants!!

    Tom,

    Reply from Bovington received today:

"I am afraid that we do not have the Service Records for the Tank Corps (or indeed any Service Records as such) , though I think perhaps from your wording that you have obtained his Service History from the National Archives already? I have searched through the War Diaries and other resources that we do have and I cannot find a Hubert Walter Carter with the service number of 110444. If you do not already have his Service History it may be available from the National Archive, but a large quantity of those records were destroyed in the bombing of World War 2 so sadly it may possibly not be found. There may alternatively be a Medal Record available for him, also from the National Archives.

If you do manage to find that he was with a Tank Corps Battalion and, indeed which Battalion exactly, we can supply copies of the War Diary for that unit.

I am sorry not to be able to help you further at this time."
