After chatting with Dave (Croonaert), he has sent me back a colour copy of a medal card I received from the national archives. It's relating to my girlfriends great grandad from the great war. Pvt. Edward Thompson 171813 machine gun corps.

It doesn't really give a lot of information so I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction of finding out more about him. For example, which machine gun corps, where he was posted, where he fought etc.

Dave said the numbers next to the mention of BWM and Victory (MGC 101/ B112 page 9313) are just the references to his entry in the machine Gun Corps medal rolls (in other words , where to look for him in another book!).

Any idea which book to look out for???

Looking at the card he served after 31 Jan 1915. The reason for us that he has no 1914-15 Star. Ancestry next month are giving free info for WW1 soldiers, quick check he is in the medal roll index that should give you his regimental details.

unfortunately, the MIC is the only (military) thing about him on Ancestry (which is where I got the scan posted above). His number would correlate to someone who enlisted in the MGC circa June 1918.

Cheers mate. When you say regimental details, will that be detailed stuff or will it just mention he was in the M.G.C? Where can I look to check?

    Many thanx

Next step, Marcus ....TNA, I'm afraid! You might be lucky and find further details on the actual medal rolls, but these aren't online.

Do you think there might be some clues in George Cloppard's book " With Machine Gun to Cambrai" HMSO 1969? Unlikely, but you never know. A.C.

Cheers for the heads up on the book Anthony. I'll have a look about, perhaps in the library to see if I can get hold of a copy.

Welcome to the forum by the way, haven't noticed your name before now.

Always nice to have another Vet around the boards.

Your welcome mate. But I'm still learning. I don't think anyone here can be a better expert than you guys who were there. Full respect. :salut:

Marcus, another book, just found, may help if you find a few more pieces of the jig-saw, it also has a good Introduction to WW1 medals. "Locations of British Cavalry, Infantry and Machine Gun Units 1914-1924" by Robert W. Gould. Published by: Heraldene Ltd, 12 The Shrubberies, George Lane, Southwoodford, London E18. 1977 (so you'll have to find the post-code!). A.C.

Many thanx once again Anthony. I guess it looks like it's gonna be a trail through a few books to pin point the information I'm after. I've bookmarked both book publishers. Any more that spring to mind, please post them here.

    Cheers mate.

To save you looking for this one, marcus, here're the relevent pages from it. You'll still have to find out his particular unit though for it to be of any use...
