WW1: Highest single day's deaths

    There is no roll for those on the Lancastria so many of those deaths are likely to be bracketed for a period such as 16th - 30th June 1940 or similar.

    There are over 1700 listed on CWGC with a date of death Between two such dates, one of which is a June 1940 date.

    Cheers Geoff-Maybe we should ask the powers that be to split the WW1 and WW2 stuff into two threads. I do like looking at stats :)

    Many thanks Geoff-It just proves to me that I was right to get an interest in 1940-That was where the real fighting and suffering took place. <Puts on helmet and takes cover> :army:

    Wikileaks quotes .. Overall, the first day on the Somme was a failure for the Allied forces. The British had suffered 19,240 dead, 35,493 wounded, 2,152 missing and 585 prisoners for a total loss of 57,470 from 1 July on the somme ,.....



    To me that must must rank pretty highly for british and commonwealth troops casualties
    but nothing suprises me about WW1, an absolutely horrendous waste of humanity .
