I have a relative, Harry Kemp who was in the Coldstreams during WW1. My understanding is that he was awarded the Military Medal. Do any of you experts have any more information?

    Hi,

You might be better posting on Great War Forum but please be aware that it is very rare for a WW1 MM citation to be found.

If you have a copy of his service record you'll likely know which Battalion he was serving in so you can search the War Diaries on Ancestry. You will also probably see mention of the London Gazette publication date on his record. As a rule of thumb the LG entry was made about 3 months after the action for which the award was made.

Your best bet might be to trawl local newspapers.

    Good Luck

'British Army Recipients of Military Medal' on Ancestry - Lance Sergeant 9472 Harry Kemp, 1st Bn Coldstream Guards. Also copy of the Award Rolls for the Victory and British War Medal.

I would suggest that you follow up the war diary links in the responses you received on RootsChat.com, even if they don’t specifically mention the award you will find out the actions the battalions were involved in.

For Harry Webb 9472, all available on TNA
Medal Index Cards WO 372/11/125886 and WO 372/23/128982
Award Rolls WO 329/2420 and WO 329/615

If we are all saying this is the same man here are his Medal index card and service medal awards.

Unfortunately Ancestry only as the diaries from 1914-1915 for the 1st Coldstreams, I have read through these diaries and there is no mention of Harry.

Hopefully this link works 1 Battalion Coldstream Guards | The National Archives
These are the rest of the diaries from the National Archives they are only £3.50 to buy.

Can't see him re MM. But was awarded a divisional parchment certificate in November 16. If can get gazette date will double check. Possibly he got MM in another battalion as does happen to have your current battalion on medal not in whch was won
