good day bob dickers,m,yesterday.05:19pm.re:ww1 german sailor pic help.he looks like an ordinary seaman. just a guess.regards bernard85 :m2:
Nothing came up, when I googled Disa German ship. However this Swedish steamer did. http://uboat.net/wwi/ships_hit/1663.html
Didn't think he looked German when looked last night. Had a Google for 'Swedish sailor' & that looks more like it. http://ancientpoint.com/inf/9823-rare_19thc_handsome_swedish_sailor_cdv_photo_from_karlskrona.html few here too. http://bewareoftherug.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/my-bonnie-lies-over-ocean.html Swedish Naval tally has crown either side of the name. http://home.swipnet.se/jarnasen/swetallies.htm see also HMS Disa. http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Disa_%281877%29
Many thanks to Bernard, RCG & Owen for your help. I did google the ship & saw the Swedish connection, however the postcard came with an all German Lot & the text on the reverse is in German, but gives no clue to his ID. Thought i would ask the opinon of the forum members. Regards Rob
There's a bit more information if you google Disa Blenda Class. Two 500 tonne gunboats built in the Class, Disa was one of them.
The SS Disa was a cargo ship that was sink in, I believe, 1915. The HMS Disa was a Swedish gunboat and part of the Swedish navy. That guys uniform is navy so therefore you must surely be looking for the HMS Disa.
If it was a german sailor, the name of the ship would have had the acronym "Seiner Majestät Schiff" followed by DISA, not just DISA. The uniform however looks pretty similar to that of a german sailor. Stefan
I believe that Stefan is correct. The cap is not an Imperial German Navy cap, which would have the German round badge with Red centre at the Forefront. Looking closer at the Cap Ribbon, it does appear to have the Royal Swedish Crowns at each side of the nane DISA. Regards Tom
