Geoff, what about commemorations on Memorials for single days, or would the use of 'between' dates make it tricky?

A list could be done for memorials also. 'Between' dates have not been counted in the above. The counts, of course, will be much higher in many cases.

Jonathan Ball It's a way of life.

Not surprising but always sobering to see the date of 1 July 1916 mentioned so often. It would be interesting to see something similar with regards to the Memorials. Would I be correct in thinking that the highest figure would again be 01/07/1916 at Thiepval?

    Sure to be.

Can you show these again lining up the dates -- for both if it is not a bother. This is fascinating.

I was going to do a calendar of our casualties and the days they died as much as can be determined, for the purpose of seeing when the news was the grimmest. We lost three on the first day of Vimy, as an example, and some of the Dieppe and Beny-sur-mere folks are from my town as well.

    Really interesting work. Thanks.

The Reichswald Cemetery statistic looks odd since this cemetery was a concentration cemetery created postwar. It was the scene, postwar, where British casualties and their allied dead, excepting those of the US, were laid to rest after being brought in from remote civil cemeteries and temporary battlefield graves.

I cannot imagine that there would be much graveyard activity here on March 24 1945 as this area at the time was intensively being fought over in the battle to cross the Rhine at this part of Northern Germany.

The other statistics are logical to understand and follow battle engagements in their respective areas.

    Otherwise,interesting statistics.

Harry, these are not burial dates, but dates of death. Reichwald is similar to Dantzig for WW1 in that it was also a concentration cemetery, where burials from the surroundings were brought in post war. That is why they are high.

    Geoff,

It reads better as "dates of death".This area of North Germany was hard fought over in the months of March and April 1945,hence the large amount of casualties both in Reichswald and Rheinberg.

Rheinberg is another concentration cemetery further south. RAF casualty remains were transferred here from Cologne South after the war.

Do you have a breadown for the RAF deaths for the raids on Cologne starting with the May 30/31 1942 "Thousand Bomber Raid"?

A trip to Wesel will illustrate what I mean for apart from the entrance to the city off the east bank of the Rhine, the city was severely damaged by the RAF in order to break the stalemate and is now a concrete city.

Thanks for the WW2 list Geoff. Your methods of presenting the statistics are always very informative. Was wowed a little by El Alamein appearing 5x; 3 of them being consecutive days.

Harry, yes good point, I've edited the thread title.

Not so easy to list the deaths for the Cologne raid without knowing which squadrons were involved. Since Harris was struggling to get the 1000, I guess he used all commonwealth squadrons he could get. I'll see if I can generate some numbers.

    Geoff,

Harris also had to rely on Coastal Command to make up 'his' 1000 bombers.

    Roxy

I've just read that the Admiralty withdrew permission for the use of Coastal Command ac; however, I am aware that my namesake, Flt Lt Willis Roxburgh DFC RAF, a Coastal Command pilot, flew in this raid.
