As I've stated in my introduction, I've stumbled upon this forum by chance, as I was conducting some research for a piece of fiction I am currently working on. Its main setting happens during World War II, namely during the invasion of Poland. I hope I am posting in the right place! Most of the story takes place in Poland, like I mentioned, but I am having difficulties in placing one of my characters' there, primarily because of their occupation/job. Initially, this character was intended to be French (open to change) and I thought of him as being somewhat of a professional (civilian) specialised in mechanics/engineering or any other occupation that could have gotten him to be enlisted by German forces and moved around along with some entourage where and when needed. However, this didn't satisfy me enough, as it seems a bit flimsy. I've also crossed anything on the medical field, since that is already taken care of. I am aware this isn't a strictly military matter, but my question is, for anyone who can help me: What kind of specialised occupation(s) could there be (at the time) that would allow someone to travel or be requested, even if they were not aligned with any of the opposing forces? For the lack of a better description, some thing along the lines of a travelling merchant, someone peddling their craft? I hope it wasn't too confusing! Many thanks in advance!
What about railway engineer specialist working on standardising the railway gauges for ease of transport.universal bogies etc
Hello there! Thank you so much for the prompt reply! That, actually, hadn't crossed my mind yet. I guess I was stuck to that one engineering concept that first popped in, didn't branch out enough. I'll add that to my notes.
