    Hi,

The national archives have the medal rolls of World War I soldiers online.

Does anybody know if there is a plan to put World War II medal rolls also online?

Unless an ancestor was killed in World War II, then I can't find a way of telling if they served in the War.

It would be great to find out the regiment they served in.

    Thanks,

    Darin.

    Darin,

It is possible to search some medal rolls on Ancestry, these however are of use only if people served in the Army in areas campaign medals were awarded, e.g. India, Palestine and other areas, before and after the war. I have access to Ancestry and am willing to have a look for anyone you may wish to be researched. I will also send you the images of the relevant pages.

    Hi Mark,

    That's fantastic.

I am looking for anybody with the surnames:-

    MAZZIE

    or

    MAZZEI

    and also

    STUPPLES from Kent, England

    and also

    O'Keefe from Cardiff, Wales.

Is that ok or do I need to be more specific?

    Thanks again,

    Darin.

    Darrin,

The initials of the people concerned would help.

    Service Date:1945-1948
    Service Location:Palestine
Regiment or Unit Name:2nd Battalion The Parachute
    Regimental Number:14465718

I have one F Stupples in the 1st Battalion The Buffs:

    Name:F Stupples
    Campaign or Service:Palestine
    Service Date:1936-1939
    Service Location:Palestine
Regiment or Unit Name:1st Battalion The Buffs
    Regimental Number:6285457

and a second record for the same Stupples:

    Name:F Stupples
    Campaign or Service:Palestine
    Service Date:1936-1939
    Service Location:Palestine
Regiment or Unit Name:Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment)
    Regimental Number:6285457

As a side note I have found two records for a J Stupples in The Buffs, serving during the Boer War.

I have found 27 O'Keefe's and an initial would make things easier.

Hope the above are the people you are looking for.

Mark, where is this listed on Ancestry please? As usual the site is being very unhelpful. All I find is a link to MOD.

    cheers,

    Geoff,

Glad you found it, I have issues with Ancestry sometimes myself with the ease of finding things. I have the top membership, I can search the database concerned if you want something.

    Hi Jonathan,

I was meaning the index cards (the same as they have for WWI).

    Thanks,

    Darin.

    Hi Darin

I got quite excited there for a moment thinking the actual medal rolls had been digitized! Maybe one day... :)

Medal Index Cards per World War I are not available at Ancestry, nor anywhere else (as far as I know), what I am searching, and rfering to is described as:

UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949
This database contains lists of more than 2.3 million officers, enlisted personnel and other individuals entitled to medals and awards commemorating their service in campaigns and battles for the British Army between 1793 and 1949. The original medal rolls were compiled by the War Office and are housed at the National Archives of the UK in Kew, Surrey. The rolls include medals awarded for British campaigns in Europe, India, Egypt, Sudan, South Africa, West and Central Africa, China, the Middle East, and elsewhere during the height of the British Empire. The collection does not include WWI or WWII medal and award rolls.
    Using the Records
While medal rolls do not provide very detailed information, the records can include the name, date, and location of a campaign or service, the soldier’s name, and the regiment or unit name and regimental number. Most rolls were arranged by campaign (or battle), then regiment, rank and surname.
The records in this collection can be searched by name, campaign, service location and date, and regimental number. Volumes may also be browsed by region, campaign, and regiment or unit.
    About the Medals
Medals were instituted by the British Army in the early 19th century for officers and other ranks for participating in a military campaign, and clasps indicated service in a particular battle. The Waterloo Medal of 1815 was the first campaign medal issued and was awarded to men who took place in the battle (or their next of kin).
Lists were submitted by regiment or unit for persons entitled to receive certain medals or clasps. There are three types of medals in this collection: for campaigns (or battles), for good conduct (or long service) and for gallantry.

To answer the question about the NWF rolls, there is no specific reference, but it may be that they are included in the India records, and I am happy to conduct searches for members.

Also Darin, were the images I uploaded relevant to your search?

    Hi Mark,

    Thank you.

The R Mazzie was Ronald Mazzie from Bristol.

    I don't know about the F Stupples

I had a John Alfred Stupples (1910-2000), but he was a POW in World War II.

    Thanks,

    Darin.

    Hi,

Unfortunately I was unable to find anything for Dominic Toye, but I did look in the UK, Naval Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1972 database for the other name in your signature, and found the following:

    Name:T Quinn
Medal or Award:RN Long Service and Good conduct Medal
    Service Year:1938-1942

    and:

    Name:T Quinn
Medal or Award:RN Long Service and Good conduct Medal
    Service Year:1942-1947

Do either of those match your man?
