World War 1 - anyone have Fold3?

Hi all,

A forum member did some more online searches than I have done previously using the name of my great grandfather (Reginald Camfield of Southampton; was in the Hants Royal Garrison Artillery).

Anyway my request is pretty straightforward. I don't have Fold3, and I could pay or wait until November when hopefully they have a free week, but if anyone DOES have a subscription to Fold3 is there any chance of downloading his medical records? Apparently - despite being in the artillery and as I understand it on heavy guns - he suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder in 1918.

I'm going to have to go find a Great War forum to learn more about his unit.

It's particulary what must be this first record that would have the most information, I think.

I don’t have Fold3 Chris, so no help at all, sorry, but, at the risk of teaching your grandmother to suck eggs, I’d highly recommend the GWF as maybe the best place to go, not that I’ve ever been on any other WW1 forum to compare!

Are you certain your great grandfather has a medical record on Fold3?

I found nothing to indicate there is, but I found his service record on Ancestry.

It is burnt and in poor condition. Hard to read in places.

I'll upload it, but I don't know how readable it will after WW2Talk has reduced its size.

There is little information and nothing to advance your knowledge relating to his gunshot wound.

I may have been misinformed? I'm a bit confused. Maybe it simply hasn't been digitized and I would need to get a researcher to go look at the medical record above.

 

Before they get the tar and feathers out on the GWF, the question you asked in your first posting in this topic is not allowed on the GWF...

War diary here for 288 Siege Battery, RGA. I wonder if that may, by some chance, hold any clue as to how your great grandad got shot.

Thanks Wobbler , it doesn't seem to cover the summer months of 1918. Apparently these battery records often don't survive, but these batteries were pretty small. It's generally necessary to go one level up in the org chart.

My father vaguely remembered something about his grandfather having been on AA duty, but apparently these Siege Batteries operated howitzers. Is it possible they were attacked from the air? I don't know.

bofors thanks, hopefully they are there. I am torn between waiting until November or paying now, because if I have to wait until November I may lose interest and forget. Which I guess is how they get ya. But it is good that they do offer a window of free access.

Bugger! When I looked at the diary cover just now, as you can see, it’s titled “JAN 1918 - MAR 1919” as if it covers the whole period. But nah, just Jan and Feb of ‘18 and March 1919.
