Ah, the book I had in mind was the recent Richard Holmes one using the mass of 'remaindered' interviews from the series. I've scanned through it and read a chapter or two but still not read the thing properly, seems good. The World at War: The Landmark Oral History from…Amazon.co.uk: Richard Holmes: Books
There was also an LP record (remember those big round black things??) with the music from the series.
AND got a copy of the 30th Anniversary DVD sent over from the UK...........haven't seen it for 30 odd years. The highlight would have to be the interviews, couldn't be done now with the passing of time.
Possibly the best archival piece ever put together on WW2. Hopefully I will get a copy one of these days.
Spidge, You don't know what you are missing.....It is bar far the best WW2 Boxset I've ever watched Regards Andy
I'd agree with this too. A cracking documentary and came second on 100 greatest Documentaries on Channel 4.
Hi Andy, I have watched everyone of the episodes when they were on TV and later on viewed it all again from VHS tapes from the library. I would just like to get the "DVD" collection someday.
Guiys, make sure that when you buy the "special price" boxed sets, they're UK produced items by the BBC...and NOT the low-priced box sets the History Channel punted out recently once they purchased broadcasting rights for international viewing.... I've got a stand-alone copy of the episode "ALONE: May 1940 - May1941"....and thaving JUST watched the satellite version again in the last copule of weeks - it IS chopped apart compared with the DVD I've got. The American satellite channels are butchering this and other "classic" documentaries to scrape together enough time for extra advertising slots; somewhere they have to get an extra two or three slots compared to even the original Thames three x two-minute-slot production. In this episode ON SATELLITE some few seconds off clips here and there that "Dear Larry" isn't narrating over are missing And American acquaintances have noticed this on the American satellite channels' dvd "special offer" sets. Be sure and go for the UK "Anniversary" or old BBC sets....or, as mentioned before, DVDs flashed over from VHS
It looks like the original from the description - Contains all 5 DVD volumes of 26 original episodes (on 10 discs) of the classic documentary series narrated by Laurence Olivier and charting the history of the Second World War. Over 32 hours of digitally remastered footage. Packed with extras, including a hour-long 'Making Of' special presented by Jeremy Isaacs. No history enthusiast should miss the opportunity to own this remarkable visual document charting the impact of WW2 on the consciousness of the world. Maybe someone can check it against their copy?
I would love one at that price however they are region 0 where I need 4. Will keep looking and hoping. Cheers Geoff
That sounds good to me Andy! Is there any way to know whether these are the "Real McCoy"? Tried to order to test the purchase however it would only allow UK & Europe addresses. Cheers Geoff
Geoff if you want a copy I will order one to my house and then ship it to you at cost. As for the appropriate version I don't know.....It looks the same as my one which I got as a crimbo pressie a few years ago and that cost over £50. Regards Andy.
