Can anyone tell me, or point me in the direction of a site that sells working Bren Mk2's? Every site I got to implies that they sell deactivated guns in the classical sense of the work, none working, rather than the modern sense of the word, removed from military service. My Grandfather was trained on a Bren Mk2, and I was hoping to find a working one, so I could take him out and shoot it for his birthday. If anyone has information, it would be appreciated. Thanks :)

If you're UK based, then forget it!

Well, I live in the U.S. so that makes it easier for acquisition, I just need to find some place that sells them. Any Ideas?

I've seen semi auto ones for sale before, just have never been able to find a site listed for them. I have a class three license, meaning I can own and buy full auto guns, so the legality of me owning it is mute. I just need to find some place that has one for sale. lol

Fair enough. It's a long time since I shot with an LMG and know that in the UK, it's now nigh on impossible outside military (including cadets) circles, though I think a company is issuing them in single shot variety.

I've no idea about US dealers (or laws regarding the use of such weapons) so I'm afraid I can't help, but I wish you good luck in your quest.

    Just had a thought.

I seem to remember seeing somewhere in the US (yes, I know it's a big country!!!) places that "Hire" automatic weaponry out for the day for use on their ranges.

Seeing as you seem to require a "shoot" for a birthday present, wouldn't one of these be easier to find (and cheaper!!!) than actually buying a Bren?

Yes, that is an option, but in the long run i would like to own one just for the nostalgia of it. Also, the closest place to me that I've been able to find, that rents fully auto weapons, in about 1k miles away. And no matter how much I love him I'm not driving 2k miles round trip for one day of shooting. lol

Check out this site. They may be able to assist.

Seems from this you cannot purchase a working model and have to convert.

Where did your grandfather see action.

This was on our Aussie website: http://www.diggerhistory.info/

The Bren was noted for its accuracy and a good gunner could chop a tree down with it.
1942-12-28. Papua New Guinea. By experience allied troops have learned to take no chances with enemy tree top snipers. Every tree top that could house snipers was sprayed with hundreds of rounds from automatic weapons. One Bren gunner varied the treatment when he sighted a sniper. Using this extremely accurate Australian-made weapon he fired several bursts at the top of a coconut tree concentrating his fire at a spot six feet from the top. The weight of the sniper caused the tree top to break and he was killed when he hit the ground 60 feet below. This photo shows sniper and the top portion of the tree lying on the ground. At the top of the sniper's outstretched right hand is his broken rifle. (negative by G. Silk).

The Bren gun was used in many roles from light support in the Infantry section to a Medium MG role when used with the sustained fire tripod that was issued with every gun. It was also used largely in the Anti-Aircraft role and special items of equipment were issued with it for this purpose such as 100-round drum magazines and tripod extension legs.
