I visited this cemetery twice in the last 8 days, as on the first occasion I was unable to find the headstone, and one of the friends who was there was unable to assist as his keys to the office had just been lost by some workmen! Anyway several texts later and hey presto he had informed me how to find the grave and put a tennis ball on it so I couldn't miss it! I took many pictures, including some of the Cross of Sacrifice which has been repaired since my last visit some years ago, with what appears to be a white plastic one! I have attached pics of two female casualties for TonyM (Tony if you want the rest please PM me an email address and I will send them on) and also the route to the small well kept patch hidden in the top left hand corner of the cemetery. Andy
Thanks Andy Well done! Strange two ATS girls in joint graves with non-related serviceman - Shortage of space in the cemetery??? Tony
Tony Not sure why, there is a block of 27 headstones all together in a very isolated plot at the back left hand side of the cemetery. Altogether there are 10 joint graves there. There are no signposts to it and unless you knew it was there or were guided to it you would possibly not find it. Having said that whenever I have visited, more by luck than judgement, there has always been someone from the friends of the cemetery about who are always most helpful and will look up the records (provided they havent had their keys lost!).... It is privately owned and not as pristine as one would hope, but I was told that they always try and keep the areas around known graves reasonably clear. having said that I did have to clamber a bit to get to one headstone!
Andy Just checked my list and, if you are going back to Woodgrange Park, I have one outstanding = POWELL, Violet, WRNS, Square 41, Grave 12033, but only if you are going back. Tony
Hi Tony, You can add a few more to your list too, was in fact with Andy on sunday ... First off Nunhead found 2 for you, better email the others there are a few of them...
Tony Probably unlikely for a while - wished I had checked before I went now, but I had only intended to 'pop' in and find my chap. If anyone else is going, then I do have the mobile telephone number of one of the volunteers who will probably be able to guide them to the headstone. I will double check my pics though as I don't remember seeing any other female casualties. Square 41 is probably the really overgrown part! Andy
