Have this photo on a disc that MLW sent me of NARA images . This one taken at St-Valery-en-Caux. I'm wondering who the chap on the right is with the Condor Legion badge on his pocket. Anyone know who he is & as I'm useless at German awards , what are the other medal ribbons for ? There's a couple more pics of him on the disc if that'll help ID him.
Had a Google around & wondered if it this bloke ? Hans-JoachimSchraepler Was Rommel's ADC in North Africa, a book out a few years ago of his letters home. Did Schraepler serve in Spain ? (Just read that Schraelper got run over by Rommel's Mammoth) edit: seen a better pic of Schraelper & dont think it's him. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51vr9hXnffL._SL500_SS500_.jpg
I think this may well be Joachim Ziegler. He was 1c (intelligence officer) in the Staff of 7th Panzerdivision. He later made the switch to the SS, which was quite unusual for General Staff officers. He would eventually become SS-General.
Is that Rommel he is standing opposite in the first photograph? Regards Tom Yes it is Rommel, note the Pour Le Merite. Medal ribbons are Iron cross 2nd class, two long service awards with mini eagles, The Sudetenland medal with Prague bar, can't make out the last one I don't know who the main picture is of.
Jerry, Thanks for confirming it is Rommel, I thought it looked like him, especially wearing the Pour Le Merite. Regards Tom
Cheers for the input chaps. Just comparing pics with Ziegler & what medals he'd have in June '40. Thanks.
Looks very much like Hans-Joachim Schraepler, even same height comparing to Rommel, but can't find any mention of him being Condor Legion nor find any pics taken from the left to show the Condor badge.
A check of Wiki shows that Hans-Joachim Schraepler wrote a book "AT ROMMEL'S SIDE: The Lost Letters of Hans-Joachim Schraepler" The book cover is on Amazon and it does look like a match going off the height etc Does anyone actually have the book?? Edit - the cover of the French edition looks clearer, is it wishful thinking on my part that there is something on his left pocket?? Mon père, l'aide de camp du général Rommel: Amazon.fr: Hans-Albrecht Schraepler: Livres (I've got no clue who he is otherwise.....)
Pictures of Ziegler from the internet here for comparasion. sorry if I've inadvertantly linked to anywhere dodgey. I'm more interested in IDing the chap that reading what someone may have written on their website. World War 2 Awards.com - ZIEGLER, Joachim Decorations seem correct, though chap in pic in post #1 has no Spanish Cross but a different award for Spain. I'm spending alot of time looking at other web pictures of his nose. cheers Dave but I linked to that in post #2. Poo (that will teach me to read ALL of the posts thoroughly) OK then how about this extract from - Rommel's Lieutenants: The Men Who Served the Desert Fox, France, 1940, Issue 7 by Samuel W. Mitcham Rommel accepting the surrender of a French Corps. Left to right: Unknown, a Condor Legion veteran, possibly Captain Schraepler; Georg von Bismarck, Rommel, Heidkaemper, French General Ihler (foreground), a Wehrmacht beamte (warrant officer), a Luftwaffe lieutenant, Hanke, British General Fortune I can’t see the image but is it saying that “a Condor Legion veteran, possibly Captain Schraepler;” is one person or two people (note the use of a comma and semi-colon……..)

I'll look that up later if noone else does.
Schraepler's profile from book compared to mysteryman's profile. To be honest doesnt look 100% like Ziegler either.

Have you tried that Bundesarkive site for other images of the surrender? It must have been well covered, perhaps even with a film camera for wochenschau? Is this photo from the same surrender? St. Valery, June 1940 | 51st Highland Division
Is this photo from the same surrender? St. Valery, June 1940 | 51st Highland Division Yes it is. Went there in 2007 . Did a 'Then & Now' of that pic with my daughter standing in for Rommel & myself as Gen Fortune.
all the June 1940 wochenschau's are here https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=cxu&tbo=d&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&channel=rcs&spell=1&q=wochenschau+Juni+1940&sa=X&ei=rxrsUMiJDcih0QXT1ICQCg&ved=0CDgQvwUoAA&biw=1680&bih=860 I'll watch a few later and see if anything resembling your man turns up

Yeah, got the book, he has an Iron cross on the pocket with "something" below it. Unfortunately he is turning to the left towards Rommel and it's not very clear, give us a mo' and I'll scan it.
