Visited this village in Holland last week. Good acount of the action here: Battle of the Scheldt: Part IV October, 1944 - The Battle for Woensdrecht and the Neck of the Scheldt Estuary There is a memorial area, with a Sherman commemorated the Canadian Armoured units:
Sherman painted up in markings of Fort Gary Horse , 2nd Cdn Armd Bde. see bottom of page 2 http://www.armouredacorn.com/Refs-%20Thumbprints%20&%20Images/CVM/CVM%20Part%2025%20(Neth).pdf
Paul, excellent photos. Thanks for posting. The Black Watch took a severe pounding on that fateful day of 13th October, 1944. Randy
Paul For forum members... more info on the Black Watch Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada -History and Uniform No other unit in 21st Army Group suffered a higher casualty rate. Over 150 officers and 2000 other ranks. Cheers from across the pond, Randy
It should also be noted that the 1st Cdn Armoured Bde landed at Sicily with 1st Infantry Div and stayed in Italy with various British Infantry units until they left for Belgium in the Feb of '45 - the 5th Cdn Armoured Div arrived in Italy in November 1943- and left with the rest to join the 2nd- 3rd Infantry and 4th Armoured. After Ortona - Christmas '43 - the two British Heavy Tank Bdes of 21st and 25th were "invited" to support the Cdn 1st Inf Div - the 25th having the task of taking them through the Liri valley and then the 21st took them the rest of the way until they all left.... Cheers
