Winter Volunteers in Sweden

I've been researching the volunteers who signed up to go to Finland before the start of the war but who ended up in Sweden instead; my father in law was one of these men. During his stay in Malung, Sweden, he was working with two men called Humphries and Maund who disappeared and were never seen again. It was believed that they tried to get back to England through Norway and, in Justin Brooke's book 'The Volunteers' it mentions that they may have had help from a Norwegian guide. I am in Sweden at the moment and have come across a possible link to these men which I want to investigate further. Does anyone know of a way in which I can find out if Humpries and Maund have any living relatives as I am sure they would be interested if I can shed a bit more light on this mystery.

    Hi Grandy

I think it might take a little more than their surnames unless a member on here has actually done any research on them specifically or has come across them some other way.

So if you have any more than a surname post it here and lets see where we get to

    Hello Grandy
A very interesting area you're researching.

    Would these be correct ?

    .
When transcribing an Escape and Evasion report, I came across two other names (although 3 men were identified as English volunteers in the text)

    Good luck with your research

    Hi Ernst

Those are the two men in question, Henry Arthur Humphries was from Liverpool and Eric George Maund was from Caerphilly. I have a photo of them taken when they were in Malung but I'm not sure how to add it to this post.

    Hi Grandy

To add photo's etc, go into the 'Reply box' and in the bottom right hand corner select 'More Reply Options' this allows you via the option 'Choose File' to upload files (of a max size) from outside of the site.

Here is a picture of Humphries and Maund taken when they were in Malung, in the hut where they stayed whilst working in the forest at Arvselen. With them is Hugo Gustafsson, sadly no longer with us, who grew up to be a teacher and local historian. The clipping is from Hugo's collection. image.jpeg
