Remembered Twyford Berkshire Wing Commander JOHN NOEL DOWLAND G C 33239, 69 Sqdn., Royal Air Force who died age 27 on 13 January 1942 Son of the Revd. Frank Michael Dowland, M.C., and Irene Dowland, of Ruscombe Vicarage, Twyford, Berkshire. Remembered with honour MALTA (CAPUCCINI) NAVAL CEMETERY The following details are given in the London Gazette of January 7th, 1941: In February,, 1940, Squdron Leader Dowland succeeded in removing an enemy bomb from a steamship. The bomb was extremely difficult to inspect and handle as it was wedged with its nose penetrating through the main deck. In June, 1940, this officer performed a similar duty on board a trawler with the same efficiency and promptitude. He has displayed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty in circumstances of exceptional danger and difficulty.
