I am not a huge fan of "Computer Active" ( subscription by gift to me ) because I have to guess what they mean by the words they use, but somebody out there with a blue screen may be going crazy with a hammer, so it might help to know you are not alone. Please see issue 529 for 6th to 19th June 2018. ( By the way, Apple are joining in the "fun" because my Apple Safari home page now tells me I am to look forward to something coming in the autumn "fall" , viz: "Four OS updates. One big day. Announcing upgraded operating systems for iPhone and iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. We’ve packed them with new features and experiences, so with a simple update this fall all your devices will feel more powerful, personal, and fun than ever." I can't wait, so simple ! My device will feel more personal, whatever that means. What utter gibberish.) Anyway, on the topic of this thread " the April 2018 Update", my summary of a Computer Active article on page 58 of the said issue 529 is that problems encountered have been: 1. Installation reaches 100% then blue screen goes black. Remedy is to do a "clean install" of Windows. Meaning, find someone who knows how and spend some money. 2. A new partition is created which is assigned a letter. Apparently this is naughty, partition creating ok, assigning letter not ok. ( remedy suggested). 3. "Please can I stop the update by rolling back" ( remedies suggested ) Not advised, those pesky hackers will get you. 4. Setting the keyboard to English ( how to do it, go to Settings, region & language settings, make sure United Kingdom selected). 5. Devices and webcams not working ( either in Settings "check for updates" or "privacy settings" ). Apparently you let an App take control of your camera. I am not joking. I pray for rain, because when it rains, the internet light turns from blue to orange to red, ( it stops working, happens to everyone in our street ) but it means I will get wet if I go to the shed to get the hammer, which will cause annoyance to the calm and reasonable member of the household.
On phone as laptop having huge update. 2 hours in & 25% done. edit:13.05 back on laptop, that seems to have gone ok, said 'No' to all the options.
Well - he was last heard from about 5 hours ago Anyone got any thoughts what his epitaph should say?? TD
Dunno what the fuss was about. Back in from work now, turned on laptop , tad slow to get going . Didn't need to change the keyboard settings that some members mentioned. Just plugged in Printer , took a couple of minutes & a few clicks to get it working again . No big deal. Scans ok. Prints ok too.
Been running with the update on the desktop for a couple of weeks now, plus a couple of routine updates and all is fine. I will say though that my back up laptop is an Apple (just in case).
Noticed another Windows 10 laptop had begun seppuku at around 6:00 PM EDT. It is now 8:08 PM and it says 24 percent complete
Came up this morning and all appeared well until a reboot around noon. After that the touch pad would not work. Updated the driver and rebooted and it still didn't work. Reinstalled touch pad and that is working for now.
S'all Windows 11 now, innit. Dunno why they didn't continue with the '10 as a service' thing (this is a lie. I have my thoughts. Cough - hardware manufacturers input - cough), but all good so far. TBH, I think it's really a large service pack sort of shift, but no issues at all after a day or two. Most remarkably, MS might finally have worked out phone integration, the silly sods. That seems rather good on the PC side, if a touch flaky at the phone end. (Though reasonably light app, and may just be a case of needing tweaking/learning to improve). Basically, nothing alarming spotted yet, with the clock no longer showing on second screen's taskbar being the only light irritation. That can await update or be fixed with an app, anyway.
Installed on a 'virtual machine' to try it out and at this point I cannot see any real necessity to switch. I'll give it plenty of time so that any issues can be be ironed out.
Given Microsoft's pattern of screwing the pooch with every other new release (95, ME, Vista, 8) I have concerns that 11 may not be the OS that I want to be on the bleeding edge of when it comes to transitioning. Is it a solution in search of a problem?
There's the fear! The alternating Windows cack/good/cack/good conundrum. This one seems a reasonably sensible subtle/cautious shift. No big crazy ideas spotted yet. Nippier (though running hardware a smidge hotter, and technically a new install so not certain). Pushing the decent search engine more forward to find settings etc.. Again though, the phone connection working properly has possibly made it worthwhile for me. I mean, even the old wireless printer still works. Unheard of stuff at such times.
