They offer it for free because they want it on a billion machines by June (and to erase the shameful stain of Windows 8).

That won't happen at the current rate, so personally I suspect they may have to go to free distribution anyway, with that becoming the standard model for operating systems.

Every cloud....It looks like (at first glimpse) all the pictures I've posted over the years are now visible. I've just checked through the Wormhoudt thread and they are all showing

Quick ! Re-format your hard drive before it's too late !

I don't believe, by the way that it updated automatically. You let it, or even told it to...You just clicked away and told Windows to get on with it !

    Hi

As I understand it, Windows 10 is being uploaded AUTOMATICALLY to your computer without you asking for it or without your approval.

There was an article in Computa Active recently about this and a solution to stop it.

I have used this and the updates still work but not the take over !!

Ok I've decided I hate Windows 10 and want my laptop back how it was. If I take it to a computer shop will they be able to make it go away for good and return me to my warm, fluffy comfort zone?

Going back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

    • If it’s been less than a month since you upgraded to Windows 10, you can go back to your previous version of Windows by going to Settings > Update & security > Recovery and selecting either Go back to Windows 7 or Go back to Windows 8.1. This won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove any apps that you installed after the upgrade to Windows 10. Learn more.
    • If it’s been more than a month, this option won’t be available in Settings and you’ll need to use a different recovery option.

I thought when all this started there was a line in the bumf that said if you do not like it you can revert back. I just googled (dangerous I know) "windows 10 remove" and along with many other links got this.

Hahaha Me trying to do that is like me hovering over the Nuclear Armageddon button.....My laptop would break down, I know it would. I can't even change a light bulb these days without me falling and pulling the towel rail off the wall

    Man up, you big girl.
It's only a slightly changed, faster, better designed operating system.

    There.
    I said it.

I held off for quite a while, but checked it out on my Brother's system before deciding whether to go ahead. A few changes, which I quite like so I jumped in and did it. Been running for a month now, (touch wood) without any problems.

Sorry Andy did not mean to scare the horses, I am the same with IT. My longwinded attempt at saying yes it looks as though you can revert, for free, if within the one month time frame. I have checked and it is safe to come out from under the bedclothes now. Cheers Brian

    I am with Andy.

I like things simple and reliable. Never press buttons if you can help it.

My ideal is the Bose radio/CD player. I have one in most rooms. Plug in, switch on, that's all. No knobs, switches or buttons. It just works perfectly every time.

Andy will be fine. All he needs to do is remember to back everything up before he does any upgrade/downgrade/sidewaysgrade.

I can't zoom in on pictures using the wheel on my mouse. I have to keep clicking a + button and then the - button to zoom out before I can click onto the next picture. I can't copy and paste pictures from my portable hard drive to my main hard drive - It just keeps thinking about it with that turning circle icon thing.

I can't view any of the PDFs citations I have other than through some online thing which winds me up, I could go on....

    I HATE CHANGE !

I am quite content with Windows 7 at the moment.

Anja is now using Windows 10 on her new laptop and found it hard going at first, but now is quite happy with it.

This thread has just inspired me to check my old Mitac Pentium 60. Vintage 1995. I reminded it that it had a C: drive! Battery obviously flat. After that it started up pretty quick: not bad after several years standing idle and stuck out in the garage.

    I just love Windows for Workgroups v 3.11. :)

Andy, my feeling is that if '10' is working OK then you're probably better off keeping it. At some point they're going to discontinue support for Windows 7 (I assume that's what you're using ?)...and they'll probably slow it down first !

Are you using 'Photos' by default ? You can go into settings and choose to open images in the old Windows Photo Viewer. Photos is quite good for things like cropping images but I don't like it for browsing lots of images and only open it when I have to.

How did you view pdfs previously ? I suspect that you need to choose a preferred option there too.

My memory is not good but I think I remember with Windows 8 that if I wanted to view a picture in my own gallery I just clicked on it and it opened. With 10 I get invalid messages and have to click on open and am given a range of options to open in. Very annoying.
