Eventually, you are going to have issues with XP trying to handle newer data and application standards. It is simply not going to be able to handle the additional requirements. Unfortunately that is a way of life.

You're not going to like Windows 10. The new patching model is like what you see on smart phones-you will be patched whether or not you want it. The only choice about patching you will have will be to delay it for a short while or not.

If all else fails I can still dust off the old MS-DOS 3.1 5.25" floppies I kept just in case

Provided you can find a five and quarter floppy reader that your hardware can read.

At least if I know when they are happening I would know not to sit racking my brains trying to understand why I had lost the mouse or the printer was missing or why my firewalls were suddenly switched off ...... oh I could go on and on. I really should know now that before I start tampering I should suspect Microsoft!

Never mind floppy discs what happened to my 40 column punch cards and wiring up my plug boards?

My first PC which cost a fortune had a 10Mb hard disc and the salesman assured me that it would last a lifetime because it was so huge!

5.25" floppy drives are no problem, I still have a few in the original allosaurus skin shrink-wrap that I'd got from Barney Rubble Office, Ammo & Moonshine Supplies :D

Now I hope this is much better trollery than that guy in the Kill Ratio thread - who's this Ratio guy anyway, Horatio I know - which I had the misfortune to find closed already. By the way, have you seen your wife lately? Is it true that she went after the Southern Gentleman's ass with a coarse salt loaded shotgun? :P *

Threadjack over, please carry on ;)

    Excellent point!

Bad fixes do occur, even with Microsoft. And, they will of course fix them, but will NOT let you know. No, thanks! XP its is.

Receiving nagging flashes from Microsoft to convert to 10 but will leave it for a new computer....not worth the risk of upsetting what I have.

It seems to me that the more systems are converted to 10,the less technical support will be required for the older systems and will represent a cost saving for Microsoft...that being so I believe that there are a number of organisations still using XP and supported by Microsoft on a contract basis.

Converted a few weeks ago. Having never used an ipad, smartphone etc the lay out is taking time to adjust to.

Lost use of the email facility for about a week but recent updates have fixed this.

Envious of those with speedy connections it took me over 5 hours to download and several more to install.

Have seen a few conflicting reports on whether windows defender is a sufficient security tool or if you also need to continue with Norton or other packages - understand windows will only run one at once?

Tempted fate. Switched laptop on, had a quick look at emails, went to shower, make bed etc and when I returned all connections to the internet had been lost. Troubleshooting couldn't discover the problem, network & sharing centre simply advised that no connections were available.

Exhausted my now limited knowledge so tried to reboot (I always thought this to be absolute no no whilst updates were being downloaded or installed). At the third attempt it said that it was re-configuring my system.

I have always been diligent about maintenance, back ups etc. so actiioning update notifications would be part of my normal daily housekeeping so if anyone knows how to take control of when this happens, please let me know.

I'm told that Windows 10 will automatically disable any pirated software. How will this work when you need to re-install?

Total novice at this but in the settings section there is an update box that then gives advanced option. This seems to give a choice between downloads being action automatically or just notified for you to action. I am sure others have better info.

My PC persists in suggesting that I install Windows 10. At the moment I'm using Windows 7 Professional which is quite easy to use.

If any members are using Windows 10 could you please let me know what the advantage is?

    Regards

I remember being grateful that there was a free update from my old Windows 7 annd I have not been disappoinred to date.

It's a lot slicker but takes some time to set up completelly...some programs are still to be correctly installed, month's later.

I'm happy with it but don't blame me if it's not for you :)

I dont use it yet but intend to get a new machine in the new year with it already installed. My friendly technician suggests waiting until they have got all the bugs etc sorted out. On the other hand a free upgrade must be attractive.

My old laptop died a couple of weeks ago and I just got a new one with Windows 10. I am still finding my way around it-there is so much on there I don't bother with, and it's much slicker too-mind you my old laptop was 6 years old with Vista on it!

I noticed you had not been very active recently. Glad the machine was poorly and not you.

It sits much more 'lightly' on the machine, Peter. It also hasn't dicked about with the essential windows functions too much - certainly better than any variant of 8 or Vista (smashing oneself repeatedly in the head with a brick beats Vista for overall user-friendliness.)
I was cautious as I loved 7 - a completely reliable environment, cosy even. but am perfectly happy with the shift.
Obviously, back up any really important pictures or docs before considering jumping, but all of mine came through OK.
Importantly for me, it starts faster, and I think allows smoother access to day-to-day nerdism. It's hard to say specifically why; it's just 'better' - basically what they should have done with 8 but found themselves grievously behind the curve of other OSs.

On the darker side, it involves a shift to the more 'modern' way of distributing OSs, in that it works best with an account with microsoft and comes with many shifts in the overall privacy agreement. (Got a hotmail account? - You already have a Microsoft login.)
My feelings on that, though, are that if you already use Android or Ios on your mobile devices, you've made that jump already.
I feel that MS may eventually have to go the 'Free OS, and make cash on apps/content' model that other environments have proven so successful with financially.
If you use Internet Explorer (which you probably shouldn't be - it's dead in the water as far as MS are concerned), you will be confronted with 'Edge' instead. That might take some getting used to.

I'm not going to directly advise anyone to shift any more - caveat emptor - but can only say I have not regretted the move at all really.

(Gonna merge this with the other W10 thread - just so everything's in one place.)

I'm even considering (insert doom-laden chord) a Windows phone because of W10, and it looking like they've finally got the integration right.

Doubt it, as I'm Android boy, but the very fact it's crossed my mind has surprised me... and the new Surfaces actually look quite nice.

I found the move to 10 a big change, especially in tablet mode as I do not have a smart phone which I understand uses this format.

However it grows on you, my main issue is having to sync email every time. I have therefore set up a short cut on my favorites bar in edge which gives me immediate access to my old email format.

As others allude to personal choice I think.

Very many thanks for your replies, it all makes interesting reading which still makes me undecided. I'll give it a while longer to see if any bugs get sorted, but I must say I'm tempted.

    Once again many thanks

    Peter
