The unit lost quite a few on that day?

That is an awful number of soldiers for a single unit to loose in one day. I make it eight from 11 LAA Regt RA on that page alone. In Italy, the average ratio of dead to injured was 8:1 so that would be a lot of casualties for a single day.

    Perhaps an ammunition explosion?

I strongly suspect that this will be mentioned in the Regt's War Diary.

All the casualties on 14 Oct 44 in the cemetery are from 33 Bty 11 LAA Regt RA with one other, the BSM, dying the following day.

I think that something bad happened.

Yes not good to loose that many soldiers in one day and the soldier that died the day later could of been from wounds from the blast of the bomb that blew up the vechiles

    Hi Sammie,
You appear to know a lot more than your first post implies regarding your Grandfathers latter service ? Is it just the `missing` army service you are looking for ? It will stop the rest of us looking for facts you are already aware of .Thanks

It is awful that so many lost their lives and like you say a lot for a unit. All I know was my grandad was in an armoured vechile which was blown up. I will look into the war diaries as I have seen a post of one and they look interesting

Yes it is just any information on his service from 1925-1931 That I am after, sorry if I didn't make it clear as not posted on sites before. I have his service from 1931 to his death but nothing from being in the 2nd Gordon's in 1925 or where he was posted until 1931

    Hi,

Can I ask how long ago your father obtained the “service record” from MOD?

Is it a typed summary (norm Pre 15 years ago) or copies of original documents (norm in recent years due to FOI rules).

If he has typed summary he ought to reapply for full papers.

I'm not sure but I think he said he finally got the name changed to correct spelling in 2002 so it might be the typed version. I will ask him tomorrow and see if he can look into getting full version. Thanks

    Hi,

Thanks for that. Looking forward to your reply.

You may find that if it is the typed version a renewed reply may turn up the “missing” documents.

Other members in similar circumstances have been advised to send a copy of the typed version (together with any MOD correspondence) with the new application forms as if a fee was paid for the typed version under the old system years ago MOD ought to provide the copy documents free gratis as a fee has already been paid.

Attached link will assist if you need to re apply to MOD as you’ll need to download forms. They won’t require a copy death certificate just attach a copy of his CWGC record.

Get a copy of military service records

Thank you for that,my dad remembers paying a fee. Hopefully he still has all the paperwork. He has given me copies of some things but I don't think I have the MOD letter but I will double check all my family tree documents in case he did give me a copy. It would be good if a revised copy brings up his earlier service.

My dad has found out the letter from MOD and it was in 2001 and a typed page. I am going to take the form over thst you sent the link for to him this weekend and resend it to MOD with the letter and the page of service details from 1931-1944 and hopefully we might be lucky and they may re send missing service records from 1925-31,fingers crossed.

    That's good news.

You need to download and complete 2 forms from the link for NOK to sign - the general form and the Army specific form.

I'd enclose a covering letter with the 2001 material querying any additional cost and outlining the previous service that you are interested in.

It may simply be the case that for some reason he didn't disclose the previous service when he joined RA but if he used the same name and DOB MOD ought to be able to trace his papers if they are filed separately.

I understand MOD response is as short as 21 days at the moment so you may not have long to wait.

    Good Luck.
