It would appear that hiS Seaman's Pouch is at the National Archives. Drew 5233 or Lee (psywar.org) will copy these files for you if you cannot get there yourself

It started by this box, he was born 1907 and living Liverpool on 39 register

I am looking at the other william Anderson but the only one born 1907 matches his medal entitlement

Obviously one of the others w Anderson without a dob may be him

There will be no CR10 as these were not within his period of service.
CR1/CR2 card may be in the pouch if they have survived.
What has happened here is his pouch is misfiled within S63095 (Ward) but it should be there all the same.
Bear in mind there may not be a CR1/CR2 card held as some have not survived. He would only usually have a CR2 card held in the pouch for service prior to Jan, 1941.
Also bear in mind that a seaman's pouch is hit or miss as to their contents and are no way a full service record. For his full service record you need to obtain his CRS 10 - not available online. If you want the file reference at Kew for that let me know.

Hugh please can I have the file reference,
The dob of the box is 17/7/07 hence why I believe it's the same man
Shown as merchant navy in 1939

    Thanks for your help

    Regards

    James,

His CRS 10 should, if it has survived, be held at Kew in piece BT 382/31

This file is held in surname block order of up to 60 other names so should be obtained by visit or via researcher.
If you need help with the break down of its contents just let me know.

    Regards
    Hugh

Both documents are a bit hit or miss with regards to the pages they contain, James. It depends on how long he was in the MN and how many ships he served in but in general about 2 to10 pages on his CRS 10 - don't confuse CRS 10 with CR10 they are not the same.
The pouch - again hit or miss on average about 5 or 10 pages.

Roughly around about £10 - £15 for both I would guess but remember don't copy the duplicated entry in the pouch which belongs to Ward (S63095).

James, this is what I have

Firstly the CR2 is not a complete record of his ships pre 1941 as in my experience there are mistakes and omissions so he may have done more voyages than those listed on the card. The dates are those of engagement not discharge.

His CR2 card records service prior to Jan, 1941.

    BODNANT - 140634 - 3.4.1929.
    ONITSHA - 128048 - 26.6.1929.
    BODNANT - 140634 - 7.9.1929.
    APAPA - 149611 - 2.7.1930
    ELSPETH SMITH - 131866 - 24.8.1930.
    BASSA - 142341 - 10.11.1932.
    BASSA - 142341 - 13.5.1933.
    MARY KINGSLEY - 162510 - 9.11.1933.
    BEREBY - 143416 - 20.6.1934
    DAVID LIVINGSTONE - 161146 - 21.9.1934.
    LEONIAN - 164286 - 1.12.1937.
    GUINEAN - 164280 - 22.4.1938.

Then the CRS 10 records from Jan 1941 until he leaves the service.

EWO - Essential Works Order (MN) (1942)

    SALVEDA - 168854 - 25.5.1943 - 16.12.1943.
Difficult to make out the writing in grey underneath but looks like he went sick Algiers.
Sealots are transportation orders dealing with the repatriation of seamen from ports abroad when they were sick/torpedoed or otherwise found themselves in need of a lift home.
He appears to have spent all of his WW2 time on SALVEDA continuing to serve after the war. His CRS 8 discharge from the MN - 7.9.1948. I can't find much on this ship but appears to be a salvage vessel probably taken up by the Admiralty from build in 1943.

I note the ship is shown as HMS during convoy MKS 30 - I found a picture of her here
http://www.cyber-heritage.co.uk/psound/sss91.jpg. The CRS 10 is a not a great copy so not sure if there is a hidden reference to RN that I am missing. He may have signed a T124X agreement to be part of her crew - effectively being subject to Naval discipline while maintaining MN rates of pay.

Any missing ships/dates could be checked by looking at crew agreements starting with SALVEDA in 1943 and working backwards as crew agreements usually show the name of the seaman's previous ship. Not too bad if the agreements are in one place - they are for WW2 (Kew) but those prior to that are in Canada.

    Hope that helps.

HMS Salveda: a Salvage Vessel (Art.IWM ART LD 4737)

image: a view of the Royal Navy salvage vessel HMS Salveda, shown from the stern, moored at a dockside. A sailor secures a length of thick rope to the dockside, with other dockworkers busy to the left. There is a large crane in the distance.
