In the Cemetery there is the grave of an unknown Airman of WW2. How can i find out the date of death mentioned on his headstone. Would it be the date of death, an estimate of date of death or the date he was found ?

    Hello Izzy,

Maybe if you post the date given on the headstone , it will give forum members a starting point for further research.

Hello Peter im totally at a loss regarding the date mentioned on the Headstone hence the question. How would i be able to find the date [if there is one] mentioned on the Headstone. If there is a date would it be the date the body was found or buried ? How would i be able to find out any information on the body would there be a death certificate for instance or an inquest i presume there must be a paper trail regarding the body but where do i start ?

    Hi Peter,

"Although it is like pulling teeth":)

The airman was "buried" on the 20th November 1941 as close as I can make out from one of my photos.

    To his right is P/O A.J.M. Adolphus 1st ? May 1941

To his left is Coporal I.W. McKinlay 2nd September 1941

    Cheers

    Geoff

There are 59 Air Force lads at buried at Wick.

You would need to discount all those after the date of the unknown airman which "may" give you a lead.

Spidge thanks for the date of burial something to start with. Im wondering if the burial records might give a clue to where the body was found.

Geoff thanks for the picture. Is the cross a representation of the cross of sacrifice found in most cemeteries with a certain number of war dead.[Cannot remember off hand the number of burials needed for a cross]

izzy: You could have found the info yourself, from the CWGC Cemetery information, using the Names of the men identified in posts responding to your enquiry....
The cemetery belongs to the Wick Cemetery Joint Committee (representing the Town Council and the District Council of the Landward area of the Parish). It contains burials of both wars; approximately 100 of which are in a special 1939-1945 War Plot in which a granite Cross of Sacrifice has been erected against the granite boundary wall and the rest in various parts of the cemetery. During the Second World War, there was a Royal Air Force station at Wick, while at Watten, about 7 miles to the north-west, there was a prisoner-of-war camp. There are 29 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war here. There are a further 134 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-45 war, including 21 unidentified sailors of the Royal Navy and 1 unidentified airman of the R.A.F. There are 3 Polish war burials and 1 non-war Service burial here.
How is it that you knew of an unidentified airman, yet not know anything about the headstone or date?

In the cemetery report it mentions that there was 1 unknown Airman. There was no mention of the date of Death or Burial.
