Log In bombs out all the time even before you have time to slurp a coffee in between sentences.

Only recently learnt to Copy and Paste but I had got to the stage where I was not going to bother posting anything!

Why can't it be made clearer to the Rookie like me that Copy Paste is essential.

I am not bothering Copy/paste this time - so here goes

Are you ticking the 'remember me' box on logging in?

    Yep Me again

Just tried posting a piece on "Museums". Got usual Log In bomb out, got back in went advanced and bombed again!

This time virtually blank scene so had to start almost from scratch - gave up trying to post some pictures.

    Thankfully Cope Paste saved me.

With 5 million posts to your name, you are obviously an seasoned campaigner.

Frankly like most dabblers on this site, I don't have time to learn all the tricks and sorry to say but for a novice your site is daunting.

I did not tick your remember me box out of principle - maybe I am an idiot but I have a feeling that it somehow allows you to trace what I do or who I am.

I saw on a separate thread that there are a lot of subscribers who pack in after a short while.

So as a suggestion - how about a common errors for beginners page or a short How To Page.

For Example, Paul I see you have a nice set of tombstones under your name, well I would like to stick a nice picture of my hero Charles XII of Sweden under mine - But how? I am sure it is here somewhere but I have not enough time to spare to find out.

This is a super site, a mine of information and it is essential that big contributors get their just recognition but don't forget that at the end of the day Advertisers want to see numbers -so you also have to cater for the idiots like me and make it super easy.

Of course, and it's allowed me to get details of every website youve visited, all your financial details and access to your bank account. Thanks. ;)

    Now then.
I'll reluctantly make some points here.

    One point:
We don't have to cater to any advertisers, or anyone else for that matter, unless we feel like it.
This ain't as it stands a commercial site. It's a WW2 history site, with a bit of mucking about round the edges, and we function primarily by the largesse of one Canadian/Chicagan gent (Is chicagan a word?), some unpaid volunteer helpers (Green & Red Usernames), and most importantly; the members, who hopefully keep it chilled and interesting.

    Another point:
The 'Remember Me' box is a feature, a plus-point, a bonus to those that are exceptionally concerned about their Internet security, provided by vBulletin (the software we use) for people to choose.
If one chooses not to tick it, the 'cookie' (that nearly all such websites leave on your machine so they can smooth your activity on the site) will expire after a certain time leaving no useful connection between you and the site (other than Google's logs, Browser history, ISP records, computer caches etc. etc.) but that inevitably means the site will not keep you logged on indefinitely - hence the timing out.
If you tick it, the cookie (a tiny text file with nothing harmful) will sit on your pooter doing no harm, but whenever you visit a page on WW2Talk, the system will know you are a particular registered member that wishes to use the site, and won't close any doors.

Not all Cookies are harmless, there are ways to use them naughtily, but ours is about as standard as any other website's.

The fact someone registered with an email, and the IP address that is logged on every single website they visit, means they're already as traceable, as anyone else on the Internet. Though why on earth I'd have any interest in tracking down the usually low grade stuff that can be garnered from that scanty info I've no idea, life's too short (unless trying to determine known Neo-Nazis, trolls, spambots etc. - those dark forces that wish to spoil our fun/researches), & it is, on the whole, a remarkably dull business.

I'm here to talk about military vehicles and men in Pith Helmets personally.

Trust us, we really are mostly pretty harmless nerds and history obsessives with some surprisingly helpful and knowledgeable chaps scattered about. Our greatest offensive Internet weapon is probably boring the disinterested to tears about sprockets, small details of regimental history, books relating to parachutists, and the current hot vogue for 1940 British Vehicle Markings.
If we didn't gather here, think of the increased wave of low grade boredom we'd inflict on our various spouses, partners, children, and passing acquaintances. (Actually, thinking about it, we may potentially exacerbate that... ).
"This is a story you will tell your grandchildren; and mightily bored they'll be."

By the by, if you want an avatar (the little picture), just give me a shout via the messaging system and I can sort it if you have bother with the explanation on the FAQs - happy to do so.

I think that you have got it about right.

Seriously, you won't find a better site for this sort of stuff. Trust me, click the remember box, the cookie is harmless. If your browser is set to the very highest security level, then its probably going to be useless, even without cookies. What are you using IE? or something more friendly?

After an idle period of more than five minutes, copy your replies from the message box before posting them; that way, if you get un-logged, you won't lose your stuff.

Also, even though I still get un-logged rather constantly, the "Remember me" box does help to get back online faster.
