?

Are you successfully staying logged in to WW2Talk after ticking the 'Remember Me' box?

Right, second time lucky with this. I'm going to post in sections this time as I lost the whole post last time.

Although this is a WW2 forum I'm hoping you might be able to help me with information regarding my grandfather Reginald Stringer. He never spoke much about his life, either army or civvy (he was a bit of a black sheep of the family & didn't keep in contact with his own family), so we would love to be able to learn something about his army career.

We think he was in the London Scottish regiment, attached (?) to the KOYLI, but my uncle has checked the Roll and not been able to find any record of him. He was born in 1899 and supposedly signed up under age, although this could be ficticious. He was possibly in the 5th Army? and in the last big battle of WW1 which if Britain had lost they would have lost WW1, but again this could be incorrect.

I will post pictures in the following post

    Hi Nicola,
This happened to me on numerous occasions then one of the guys pointed out that when signing in you should always tick the `remember me` box ..this works for me unless I forget!:D

Like Verrieres says: Tick the 'remember me' box when you log in.

If that doesn't sort it - and it does in most all cases I get relating to this (you are not alone) - It'll most likely be a security setting on your browser that's disallowing cookies.
Problem is; there are many browsers, and many reasons for having uncommonly high 'security' settings, so I'm loath to give individual suggestions. The forum works to a resonable 'web average' set of requirements and it's not really my place to tell people how to set up their pooters.

Good practice is to quickly select and copy the entire text of a post before hitting Go Advanced/Preview/Submit. I do this as a matter of course for medium/long posts on any forum I use now, as it means if there's a crash or hangup I can just paste the lost text back in once I've sorted the glitch. Keeps the swearing to a minimum.

Hi Nicola and others with a similar problem.

Re the advice given by Von Poop:

I always do this, even for the shortest of posts, as quite apart from glitches that may occur during the setting out of the text, one usually wants to add a link or perhaps attach an image and it is so much easier to do this off piste, as it were.

    Thanks for the tip Verrieres.

I've had the same problem, but now learn't to "copy" my text before hitting the "post" button (keeps my swearing to a minimum also Adam!). :)

Simple solution: compose your posts in Wordpad and then copy/paste. Wordpad transfers them in .rtf so no formatting is lost and you can then add any necessary code tags simply by highlighting the URL or text and clicking the appropriate icon in the reply screen.

Note of caution if composing posts on another program.

Good idea to make sure it uses PLAIN TEXT format, as then there won't be any hidden code tags that show up as garbage or smilies when the forum software gets hold of 'em.
Rich Text/.rtf as mentioned by Vitesse above, will work for some but not others (make sure you have full WYSIWYG posting turned on in your Usercp, but even then it may not work quite right depending on browser, settings etc.).

If you use Windows, your resident plain text program is Notepad, which lives under 'Accessories'. Though to be honest - cut & copy is a tad less fiddly than composing externally.

I do too. Ounce of prevention and the like.

I've had to retype long missives before. It is exasperating.

To me, Notepad is the better option when copying/pasting to the forum.

Nicola, all you have to do when you type your last period (or full stop), is to hit Ctrl A, then Ctrl C and it is copied. If you want to wear a belt with your suspenders, open Notepad and put your cursor there, then hit Ctrl V to paste it in Notepad, before you send it.

I don't have any problems at all with getting unlogged against my will, I have no recollection of anything of the sort for months and months despite my quirky Vodaphone connection. I suppose my sunny Weltanschauung is absorbed by the ethereal waves that bring WW2Talk into my notebook :D

You're so lucky. Today. quite apart from losing a lengthy reply, I was logged out in the time between looking at a pic on one post and a pic on the very next post. I have belonged to another forum for years without this problem and I wonder why the software on this one (and it's not the only one like this) cannot cope!

If the subjects were not so interesting, I would not bother.

I never have problems with being logged out, and I never do a long post directly "now" without copying before I press submit.

Would't it be so much nicer if the "Remember me" box were replaced with a "Forget me not" one?

Log In bombs out all the time even before you have time to slurp a coffee in between sentences.

Only recently learnt to Copy and Paste but I had got to the stage where I was not going to bother posting anything!

Why can't it be made clearer to the Rookie like me that Copy Paste is essential.

I am not bothering Copy/paste this time - so here goes
