    Von AULOCK, Andreas - (23 March 1893 – 23 June 1968)

    SECRET
    C.S.D.I.C. (U.K.)

    Oberst Andreas von AULOCK

Commandant, Fortress of ST. MALO; Captured ST. MALO, 17 August 1944.

    Arrived:
    No. 1 D.C., 18 August 1944
    No. 11 Camp, 22 August 1944

    Left:
    28 August 1944

    CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE
Surrendered with the remnants of the garrison of ST. MALO after a bitter fight.

    CAREER
    1914 - 1918 - Served during the World War in 95 Regt.
1921 - Retired from the Army and became a salesman with General Motors.
1939 - Rejoined the German Army.
1944 - Awarded the ‘Oak Leaves’ for his fight at ST. MALO.

    NOTES
A typical, monocled, aristocratic German officer. Politically pro-British and violently anti-Russian. A brother, who had been leader of a ‘Freikorps’, was Chief of Staff to General VIEROW (PW), Militaerbefehlshaber A, NORD-WEST, in PARIS.

This is the ‘Mad Colonel’ of ST. MALO. He had a very high opinion of himself - and of his attraction for women.

He trimmed his sails to the wind and thought only of himself and his well-being. This is the man who looked forward to being sent to the USA, as he fondly imagined that the Americans would accept his offer to work in a General Motors factory, so that he could gain experience to take up his former career (motor-car salesman) after GERMAN had lost this war.

    He was an untrustworthy type.

    ? - Promoted Lieutenant Colonel
1939, December 27 - Reported by prisoner of war, shortly before this date, to be commanding 179th Field Artillery Regt., on the Saar Front.

The last item was reported under the name PAPINGER, but there can be no doubt as to the attribution. The appointment, as commander of 179th Field Artillery Regt., of an officer previously commanding a Bde. of 33rd Field Artillery Regt., provides confirmation (if that ere needed) of the formation of 79th Division in XII Corps Area.

1940, April 9 - To judge by a photograph, commanding the motorised division which invaded DENMARK from Flensburg area.
    [Handwritten additions:]

    1942, April 10 - Commanding LXV Corps, G.O.C., Serbia.
1942, October 3 - Still Commanding LXV Corps in Serbia.

Clean-shaven, with beaky nose and double chin; he has put on a good deal of weight during the past ten years. In the same period, he has been passed by most of his contemporaries in the promotion field; yet his previous career ought to have given him admirable qualifications for the successful command of a motorised division.

    NOTES
A professional soldier, having the honour of the soldier at heart. Anti-Nazi, though not openly an enemy of the regime. He confessed to loathing for HIMMLER, called HITLER an ape and condemned his policy as disastrous, but was horrified that the (20th July) attempt on HITLER’s life was made by Generals. He criticised senior Army officers and muddles made by Army High Command. He expected GERMANY’s complete defeat and utter collapse and even welcomed the prospect of the SEYDLITZ movement gaining control in GERMANY in the future.

    NAZIS IN THE NEWS
    LXIII.
    German Generals in the West:
    Hermann BALCK
(This material may be used without restriction, provided the source is not quoted)

    DNB (European) 5th October 1944”
“The importance which the Germans attach to mechanical or motorised weapons reveals itself in the fact that in the West apart from Field Marshal RUNDSTEDT and Colonel General BLASKOWITZ, Field Marshal MODEL and General BALCK are commanding troops ... ”
(Extract from Front Survey by M. Hallensleben)

The manner in which these four names have been quoted by Hallensleben does not justify any definite conclusions about the distribution of commands on the Western Front. It contains however the first public German confirmation that RUNSTEDT has returned to the front. RUNSTEDT would thus appear to have taken over once more the post of C.-in-C. in the West (formally filled by KLUGE); and MODEL is presumably filling the place of ROMMEL, as commander of the Northern of the two German Army Groups in the West. BLASKOWITZ presumably continues in command of the (remnants of the) Army Group formerly stationed in the South of France. BALCK may be in command of new Third Army Group in the West or he may have become “General der Panzertruppen West”, in succession to GEYR von SCHWEPPENBURG, who has disappeared. All the above mentioned generals have been dealt with in earlier issues of “Nazis in the News” with the exception of :

    Hermann BALCK.
He is the son of a general. He was born in Danzig in 1893, but has been resident in Berlin for a long time. BALCK was already in the German Army when World War I broke out and was first commissioned (Goslar Chasseur Battaillon) in August 1914. Throughout the war BALCK served in the front line, distinguished himself by great bravery and daring, and was wounded no less than seven times.

He was taken over by the Reichswehr in 1920 (joining a cavalry regiment), became “Rittmeister” (cavalry captain) in 1929 and Major in 1935, taking over in that year the command of a cyclist battalion. In 1938 he became Lieutenant Colonel and was posted to the

    NOTES
Previously a technician. Very intelligent, with an orderly mind, which is perhaps due to his long staff training. Has offered to collaborate with us in getting rid of the Nazis and stopping the war, and his statement that no selfish motives underlie this offer may be believed.
