As the more knowledgeable among you know Major Cook led 3rd Battalion, 504th PIR, 82nd Airborne across the river at Njimegen during Operation Market Garden. Beyond this one mention of his name in all of the sources that I have researched I can not find out anything about this individual. Can any of you please enlighten me as to who this person was, how old was he, what other actions he took part in? Did he survive the war? Any piece of information would be appreciated. Many thanks Outside.
He retired a Lt Col. and was the CO of 3rd Battalion The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) Trooper Pictures during World War II Some more mentions of him in the links below: 82nd Airborne Division During WW II - Campaigns - Holland Brothers in Arms: The men of A Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment during WWII Someone seems to think he served as a Colonel in Vietnam too He was played by Robert Redford in The Bridge Too Far. Cheers
And this link and a Picture of him from a the link above: Tucker's Troopers | The Odyssey of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment 1942-1945 The 82nd were at Cheneux in Belgium after Op Market Garden so I'd expect him to tip up in some Battle of the Bulge accounts unless he was wounded etc.
Thanks guys, all your suggestions are being followed up as my work permits. Its quite astounding, that with all the history websites, this guy simply does not factor into anything. Even the 82nd Airborne site only lists him in the context of Market Garden. I managed to obtain copies of the after action writeup of the MG affair, and it didn't even mention him by name. Cheers Outside.
I'm about to read After The Battle's - Op Market Garden (W/end) and I'll post any mentions on here. Its two volumes so I would expect a reasonable mention.
ps There are a few Airborne fans on here you might wish to put 82nd in the title to attract their attention
