Who was in North Africa 1944?

  1. hello all!
There’s no war diaries for my grand dad’s unit from March to may 1944 (467 independent LAA battery) and his service records say nothing about that time period, except that he arrived to NA from Gibraltar in March.
Any ideas of what divisions/battalions/regiments etc could have been there then?
    Thanks and cheers :)

I have no information about this unit, but whenever I am faced with gaps in the war diaries, I always turn to the diaries of the superior unit or formation for clues. For example, if an infantry battalion's diary is missing, I look to the brigade and division they were members of during that period. I don't know how AA batteries were organised, but you might want to check the paperwork for the command/regiment/HQ they were under.

  4. Yes, I’ve recently learned about this.
There was just so much reconfigured from Anti-Aircraft to other needed soldiers that it’s difficult.
The one level above them has no war diaries either it seems...
    Thanks :)

    Jeremy,

Have you physically looked at WO170/1318 (467 Bty. June-Oct 44)? My experience has shown the description of the months in Discovery are wrong and the rest of the files for 1944 may be there.

I won't be going to the TNA for a few weeks but I can easily have a look if you do not have chance yourself.

    Regards,
    Gary.
