i have a victory medal from 1st world war,my father found this medal several years ago_Only now i have been doing my family tree & i am researcing my familys millitary past, have i really looked at it. Iwrote down the details around the edge of the medal,it gave me the soldiers name, service number then it says L.N LAN.R. can anyone tell me what this means. I entered this soldiers name in to commonwealth war graves commission web site,it tells me he was was a private with The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment,is this what the initials are? on the reverse of the medal it reads "The Great War For Civilisation 1914-1919". I would love to return it to a family member, but i dont know how to do this correctly.

That is a very honourable thing to do Thomas, and I am sure somebody will be able to give you the right information to help you find its rightful home.

    Well done.

Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (The Loyals); disbanded in 1970. He may have seen service in other regiments; this can be checked on the online medal index cards on the National Archives site.

Service number will not necessarily be unique; at this time numbers were allocated by the Regiment (or even Battalion).

If he does not show on the CWGC, chances are he was almost certainly a survivor (although there are errors and omissions).

Please post this question on the Great War Forum. It is dedicated to World War I, and the denizens there are the true experts in tracking down WWI soldiers. http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ Nice of you . Doc
