I've just missed the boat I think. Today I learned that John Simpson is nephew to Flight Sergeant Alan Fidler, who was Wingate's RAF Air Liaison Sergeant on Operation Longcloth or Chindit 1. I was Googling around listening to the cricket and found him mentioned in a couple of Simpson's books. What are my chances with a cold call email to the Beeb??
Answering my own question........zero. Very poor response from Aunty, but I have other avenues to explore, thanks to my special contacts in the seedy underworld of sleuthing.
Bamboo-not even an automated reply? When I complained about their BBC People's War website, I never heard from them either. I think Ron (Goldstein) did though  Lesley
Hi Lesley, Yes, I received a reply from their 'Programmes department', but they had clearly not really read my email at all, just fobbed me off with 'we're busy, try again soon'. As I said, I've got other irons in the fire so I'm not too concerned. Best wishes. Steve
Hi All, Yes would have to agree watched Minnie Driver get very emotional about her Father.. And to think DFC ended up in the Thames... Well worth seeing again
Excellent episode and very timely after a few flat WDYTYA, and Minnie seemed really interested in what she discovered.
Steve, probably best to contact the production company direct rather than through the Beeb: http://www.walltowall.co.uk/contact.aspx A super programme last night, and agree Minnie really seemed to have a genuine interest in discovering about her wider family.
I've just watched the Minnie Driver episode on iplayer. Very interesting that her father was awarded the second DFM of the war - AC Charles Ronald Driver 9 Sqn for actions at Heligoland Bight. Roxy
This one was quite touching in places. It amazes me to see some of the old written records in places like India. Stored on top of cupboards in hessian bags, where are the white gloves and thought police like those at our National Archives.
