Great series tonight (so far). I really felt for her about her Grandfather who fought in WW1 Here here - was good! Especially the wrong records part! Amazing how you spend 50% of your life not being affected or worried about where you came from, then suddenly it hits you and it means the world. Nearly cried on the communal grave, all that money and sense of wanting to do the right thing and you can't.
Brilliant program tonight. Identified with the birth of Louis to an unmarried Servant, single, out of wedlock. My dad was born under the same circumstances in the UK and I am still hooked on finding out more about his Mother (He was fostered after his birth, but kept her surname). The program has spurred me on to keep looking, as you never know what will turn up.
Paul. I saw your post about Rupert Penry-Jones's father not serving at Cassino. He did and, as CO of the Fd Amb, spent most of Apr in the railway station. The MDS was back at Minturno. I researched this for the programme and now the detail. FdeP What FA was he in then?

I you need any 'look ups' I have census for 1841 to 1911 Hyacynth Thanks for offering, but I have already done that research with no positive results. I have the Mothers name from the Birth Certificate, but need to know her age as there are 3 possibles on the Scottish Census (where she came from). No age for the Mother on the BC. Cheers - Rob
I thought JK, had quite a rollercoaster in her journey........... but the Great Grandfather's ww1 service was really intresting with the revalation of a medal after all!
I thought JK, had quite a rollercoaster in her journey........... but the Great Grandfather's ww1 service was really intresting with the revalation of a medal after all! Absolutely brilliant story. For her family to have kept all the letters her ancestor wrote to his sweetheart for nearly 100 years was very moving, and all the photos too. What we would all give to find something like that in our family history. Best WDYTYA for a while. Lesley
Just watched the J K Rowling episode and it was the very first episode I've ever watched of this programme. Got to say I really enjoyed it, the journey of discovery was fascinating. The communal grave was heartbreaking and I felt for her so much.
He ran off with an American tart......Silly fool Highlight of the series for me...I'm still chuckling now
Sadly nothing about Robin's experiences in Italy. Ho hum. Interesting as it was, I was looking forward to some WW2 and Guards stuff.
What an amazing end tonight-Whats the odds of living across the road from where his great grandfather was hiding.
Super episode, good to see a different angle on the Great War. He certainly was a lover & not a fighter with all those kids. What a shame he had to see his 8 sons go off to fight in round 2 .
Thought it was terrible and full of nonsense - "pals battalions" in the artillery, Camberwell "unusual" in raising it's own artillery unit when there were dozens of locally raised RFA units, and a soldier who was a serial deserter. I always like it that shirkers who don't do their bit are suddenly 'heroes'.
I try to ignore the errors & concentrate on the story. I did moan at tv at times but liked the fact they dealt with what could be a difficult subject . As for the first part can you imagine today's primadonna footballer's going down t'pit cos they go a dodgey knee?
Why they have to get a IWM man down to talk about artillery at Woolwich where the records were held in the first place and there are quiet capable people there on site Rob
What an amazing end tonight-Whats the odds of living across the road from where his great grandfather was hiding. Turning out to be a great series. It's weird isn't it-have you ever had one of those moments? I have- I was talking to an old chap who has lived round here all his life and I happened to mention one of my ancestors names-Clements-funny enough he used to work with him and that was 50 years ago. Even told me who his daughter was and who she married. Funnily enough if he hadn't told me her married name I would never have been able to get in touch like I have. Spooky. Lesley
