In ref to ww2 this episode was the best of the series covering France 1940, the award of a MM and mention of not only Kohima, one of the most gruesome battles of the war but also as Urqh has touched on PTSD and its not being recognised at the time. I thought that David Murray the officer they spoke to (who lives in Bristol.......I wonder whereabouts:huh:) was very honest in his opinion on this but also his mentioning of his respect mixed with a little fear of Tam Darling............ a battle hardend NCO who had not only served the crown for some years but also been decorated for bravery in the field. And what an end the story had! I thought this link to a thread on here would go well with this thread http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/1940/27803-1st-battalion-queens-own-cameron-highlanders-france-2.html

A truly excellent programme - I watched it late last night on Sky+ - and thanks for the 1st Camerons thread which I had previously missed.

I watched enjoyed and was very moved by Alan's journey into his grandfather's past , a very brave man to take the "challenge" to see where you came from.
Certainly you could feel for the poor man as he turned the pages and read his grandmother's letter - when she said the box had lain in Liverpool docks for a year because she could not afford the £4 carriage - so very very sad I felt like putting an arm around him .

Whilst BBC takes a lot of flak about "licence payers money" certainly no complaints regarding this very excellent window into the past and certainly my thanks for those who have shared their lives with us.
    Thank you Alan.

When Alan was talking to the gentleman who fought with his grandfather at Kohima , a few weeks ago I had a similar conversation ( telephone), with a man who served with my father in WW2" , my contact was also made via the internet - certainly we can all draw parallels with the experiences of many who take part in this very excellent series.

Did I mishear the Cameronians Historian? I could have sworn he said to Alan Cumming that he probably wouldn't find any more details, in the Citation, about the events leading to his Grandfatjer being recommended for the MM.

Looks like someone found my old research in the BBC archives... Unless they have ignored her military ancestors?

Funny, I thought as soon as I heard she was being done that there must be a WW2 connection as the Fox's have officer written all over them. Guards officers infact as far as her father and uncle go :)

The only thing she said was she discovered the family motto and was very proud of it.

Her grandfather was an officer, but not in the Guards.

They have a great line-up of celebs on this new series. They say the Richard Madeley one has lots of surprises. I loved all the series of WDYTYA-some very harrowing though-I remember seeing the eposide of Jerry Springer at one of the extermination camps and it was so sad. I've done genealogy in my family tree and got back to 1795 and I'm afraid no famous relatives-the only scandal I found was that my grandfather was illegitimate.

Was a bit disappointed in June Brown's story in WDYTYA last night. Somehow she seemed to be a bit "distanced"-if that's the word-and kept interrupting when people were talking! Hope some of the other stories are a bit more riveting considering how much the BBC advertise the programme.

    Paul.

I saw your post about Rupert Penry-Jones's father not serving at Cassino. He did and, as CO of the Fd Amb, spent most of Apr in the railway station. The MDS was back at Minturno.

I researched this for the programme and now the detail.
