Re. Danny Dyer - I was fascinated to see: EastEnders bosses deny Danny Dyer rumours

"He recently found out he was an ancestor of William the Conqueror, Edward III and Thomas Cromwell on the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?"

But now it's been amended to:

"He recently found out he was an descendent of William the Conqueror, Edward III and Thomas Cromwell on the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?"

Albeit I think I have seen something like this before: ;)

    Zaphod Beeblebrox - Wikipedia

"He is from a planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuse, and is a "semi-half-cousin" of Ford Prefect, with whom he "shares three of the same mothers". Because of "an accident with a contraceptive and a time machine", his direct ancestors from his father are also his direct descendants (see Zaphod Beeblebrox the Fourth)."

Just watched the rerun of Danny Dyer - Who Do You Think You Are?

I'm a sucker for these programs, but it always makes me laugh when a celeb gets excited about being related to some historically famous figure. In Danny's case, its Thomas Cromwell, his 15 times great grand father.

They say 1 in 10 of us don't know who our real father is. So you haven't got to go back through your paternal line very far before you are almost certainly following the wrong family tree.

Also, if you go back 10 generations you have 2^10 ancestors (1024 at 10th generation or 2046 cumulative). For Thomas Cromwell >>> Danny Dyer its 2^17 or 131,072 ancestors, and the DNA contribution is, well, extremely small. So stop looking for facial similarities in those old 15th century paintings, or imagining you have inherited some aspect of their character.

And by the time you get back to 1066 you have more ancestors than the number of people living in Britain at the time....so I claim William The Conqueror!

However, I still love that program.

I like the way the researchers manage to keep a straight face when telling him of his inks. I did like the Tollemache interlude, what a nice chap

Why not take a DNA (Dyer Not Applicable) test? :)

He is probably glad he is not related to me.
I sometimes wish I wasn't related to me

Unfortunately we are all related to ourselves to a greater or lessor degree. Because we accumulate more and more ancestors as we go back in time, while the available population pool shrinks, we get lots of duplicates.

In some communities there are a surprising number of duplicates, even within the last 5 or 6 generations (e.g. Norfolk ...only joking!).

Hey I've just thought of a new idea for a genealogy tv program: How Many Duplicate Victorian Ancestors Do You Have?

When we moved to our village, it was only a few generations back they stopped nesting in trees :)

Never saw any of those back in 2018.
They repeated the Judge Rinder one tonight.
I'll never look at a panzerfaust again without thinking of him.
